Position Summary

The Bridge Preservation Engineer serves as an entrepreneurial, forward-looking catalyst responsible for advancing bridge preservation practices while driving strategic growth for NCPP. This role focuses on expanding program impact through new ventures, funding opportunities, and portfolio of services. Working with agencies, industry, and partners, the position promotes the adoption of emerging technologies and strengthens NCPP’s national presence, influence, and long-term sustainability.

A proactive, business-minded approach is essential to identify opportunities, build collaborations, and grow program offerings.

Primary Duties and Responsibilities

  • Lead entrepreneurial efforts to develop new service offerings, training programs, and funding opportunities that expand NCPP’s bridge preservation program’s reach and resilience.
  • Develop and implement strategies to grow NCPP’s national network, increase partner engagement, attract sponsors, and strengthen financial sustainability.
  • Provide technical leadership to address bridge preservation needs, challenges, and priorities.
  • Identify, promote, and accelerate the adoption of best practices, proven solutions, and innovative technologies.
  • Lead and facilitate regional and national partnership meetings, technical exchanges, and collaborative forums.
  • Establish and coordinate technical working groups to advance innovation and guide strategic direction.
  • Assess and synthesize stakeholders’ needs to inform program development and growth initiatives.
  • Develop and deliver training programs, workshops, and professional education offerings.
  • Support outreach efforts to strengthen NCPP’s visibility and engagement.
  • Contribute to research initiatives, including development of competitive proposals and high-impact projects.
  • Maintain strong, proactive communication with all sectors of the bridge preservation community and provide expert guidance/technical assistance.
  • Representing NCPP at key meetings and events, as directed, and lead targeted efforts to expand participation, recruit new partners/sponsors, and cultivate strategic alliances that drive long-term program growth.

Required Degree

Bachelors -Civil Engineering

Minimum Requirements

  • A Bachelor’s degree in Civil Engineering or a closely related field
  • Professional Engineer (PE) licensure
  • 10 years of bridge engineering experience with a transportation agency or equivalent
  • Progressive experience in bridge preservation, including leadership, program development, and budget oversight
  • Demonstrated leadership in organizational and strategic planning
  • Ability to grow and integrate program activities across organizations
  • Ability to integrate related activities with other entities to produce continuity of effort
  • Proven ability to build and maintain partnerships with diverse stakeholders in achieving common goals

Desired Qualifications

  • Research experience, including serving as a principal investigator on competitive grants
  • Extensive knowledge of and experience in highway bridge maintenance operations, construction practices, materials and design

Work Hours

The Bridge Preservation Engineer reports to the Director of the NCPP. Level of effort will be variable from week to week, based on activities underway and needs, but will average a commitment of 20 hours per week (50% full time). The successful candidate will be required to travel and represent NCPP at relevant meetings and events (estimated 6 – 12 trips per year). MSU strives to provide a flexible work environment, and this position has been designated as fully remote.
