Survivor Support Coordinator

Position Summary

The Center for Survivors is a Confidential Program at Michigan State University. The Michigan State University Center for Survivors Survivor Support Coordinator will provide timely, non-judgmental, compassionate care to interpersonal violence survivors. The Survivor Support Coordinator provides direct service to a diverse student population. The Survivor Support Coordinator assists the Therapy Team Supervisor with gathering and evaluating essential paperwork and documentation, including but not limited to intake screening and assessment forms, gathering consents and releases on behalf of Center for Survivors Therapists and Advocates. The Survivor Support Coordinator will take phone calls from survivors at the Safe Place during business hours. The Survivor Support Coordinator has ethical, professional, and legal responsibilities to maintain records regarding work with clients and to protect client confidentiality in accordance with guidelines set by VOCA/VAWA, MSU, the State of Michigan, and other professional associations.

Job Responsibilities
•Reviews referral packets and assessment information for referred clients.
•Supports the Therapy Team Supervisor and Intake Therapist in contacting and following up with clients interested in services.
•Provides information about reporting options, health care options, and advocacy services at the Center for Survivors (Criminal Justice, Title IX, institutional, personal, and academic) to survivors of interpersonal violence as needed.
•Answers the phone and provides resources and support to survivors and co-survivors during business hours. The Survivor Support Coordinator will transfer business related calls to the Office Coordinator.
•Assists survivors with completing Michigan Crime Victims Compensation applications if appropriate.
•Conducts crisis appointments, initial contact for clients who seek services at Center for Survivors in crisis.
•Provides occasional court advocacy, law enforcement advocacy, institutional advocacy in compliance with Title IX, personal advocacy, and academic advocacy to survivors of interpersonal violence using empathy and empowerment.
•Coordinates referrals to services at the Center for Survivors, on campus and in the community when necessary.
•Follows up and tracks referrals to ensure quality of care according to the individual client’s needs.
•Assists in facilitating training for new Survivor Advocacy Crisis Intervention (SACI) volunteers and Volunteer Medical Advocates once per semester.
•Provides on-boarding and on-site supervision for volunteers working at Safe Place shelter.
•Completes other miscellaneous VOCA Grant, University, and program documentation as needed.
•Creates and maintains client record in Vela, scans and saves relevant documents into client files.
•Responsible for creating VOCA reports in Vela for the Director on a quarterly basis.
•Maintains collaborative relationships with campus and community partners.
•Maintains client confidentiality.
•Accesses and updates information on the Center for Survivors website and social media accounts as needed.
•Provides back up support to Safe Place on-call schedule.
•Assist CFS with administrative support and tasks as needed.
•Completes other duties as specified and assigned.

Minimum Requirements

Knowledge equivalent to that which normally would be acquired by completing a bachelor’s degree in Social Work or a related human services field; up to six months of related and progressively more responsible or expansive work experience in counseling in a health/mental health environment; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

A. Demonstrated competency and expertise in providing services and building relationships with diverse populations.
B. Experience providing crisis intervention and support services to survivors of interpersonal violence.
C. Experience with data collection and reporting.
D. Understanding of interpersonal violence and natural responses to trauma.
E. Awareness and experience using an intersectional lens with a focus on multiculturalism, diversity, equity, and inclusion.
F. Demonstrated empathy and supportive communication skills.
G. Excellent written, verbal and presentation skills.
H. Ability to plan, organize and prioritize work responsibilities.
I. Ability to be honest and maintain professional boundaries.
J. Ability to work collaboratively with other clinicians and victim service responders.
