Specialist - Advisor-Continuing

Position Summary

The Assistant Director for Global Support Services provides leadership for the academic advising and support services that contribute to the global experiences of undergraduate students within the Eli Broad College of Business. The position serves as the primary Undergraduate Academic Services (UAS) resource for matters related to international students, incoming exchange students, and Broad students participating in education abroad programs.

The Assistant Director leads the development, coordination, and continuous improvement of advising practices, processes, resources, and staff training related to global student support. This includes helping students navigate the intersection of Broad College academic requirements and international educational experiences; coordinating academic support for incoming exchange students and students participating in semester, summer, faculty-directed, exchange, and other education abroad programs; leading the administration and student communication for the Broad International Business minor; identifying and addressing barriers affecting globally engaged students; and partnering with College and University colleagues to support effective and consistent services.

As a member of the UAS Admin Team, the Assistant Director contributes to unit leadership, planning, and decision-making and supervises approximately 2-3 professional academic advisors. Supervisory responsibilities include coaching and professional development, performance management, workload planning, and providing guidance on complex advising and student-support matters. The Assistant Director also provides leadership and training to the broader UAS team in areas related to global programs, policies, procedures, and academic planning.

The Assistant Director maintains an academic advising caseload and provides comprehensive advising to prospective students, business-preference students, and admitted Broad students. Advising may include degree and course planning, major and career pathway exploration, education abroad planning, interpretation of academic policies and requirements, graduation planning, and connection to appropriate College and University resources. The position serves as a resource to students and colleagues when academic situations involve international coursework, exchange programs, education abroad, or other complex academic considerations.

The position also contributes to broader UAS efforts supporting student success, persistence, and degree completion, including prospective and new student programming, student outreach and interventions, degree clearance, College events, and other student-facing initiatives. The Assistant Director teaches sessions supporting the semester education abroad pre-departure course each fall and spring and may facilitate a one-credit seminar emphasizing first year experience or senior launch. The position represents UAS through appropriate College and University committees, partnerships, and initiatives and works regularly with faculty, academic professionals, and administrative colleagues across the University.

UAS supports flexible work arrangements that may include predictable day/time flexibility and remote work opportunities, consistent with university policy, operational needs, and student-facing responsibilities. More than 50% of this position’s responsibilities require on-site work. Flexible schedules are coordinated within the team each semester and are expected to be predictable, reliable, and supportive of continuity of service. Occasional evening or weekend work may be required to support events, student-facing activities, or university initiatives. 

The minimum salary for this position is $77,000. Final salary will be commensurate with relevant experience, educational credentials, position scope, and internal equity. Every effort will be made to provide a competitive salary that is equitable among Broad undergraduate-facing professionals.

Required Degree

Masters -Education, counseling, student affairs, higher education, business, international education, or a related field.

Minimum Requirements

Well-prepared candidates will demonstrate:

• A minimum of five years of progressively responsible experience supporting undergraduate students through academic advising or comparable student services.

• Demonstrated professional experience directly supporting international students, incoming exchange students, education abroad participants, or comparable globally engaged student populations, including academic planning and the interpretation or application of related academic policies and requirements. 

• Demonstrated experience leading or coordinating an area of student services, advising operations, or a comparable functional portfolio, including responsibility for developing or improving processes, practices, resources, or service delivery. 

• Experience supervising professional staff, including providing ongoing direction, coaching, feedback, and performance management. 

• Demonstrated ability to interpret and apply academic policies, procedures, and requirements and exercise sound judgment in complex student situations.

• Experience coordinating programs, services, projects, or processes involving multiple stakeholders.

• Strong written, verbal, interpersonal, organizational, and problem-solving skills.

• Demonstrated ability to work effectively with students and colleagues from a wide range of backgrounds and experiences.

Desired Qualifications

• Experience providing academic support to both incoming international or exchange students and students participating in education abroad.

• Experience supporting the academic planning and administration of semester-long education abroad or exchange programs.

• Knowledge of academic issues associated with international coursework, education abroad, transfer credit, degree applicability, course sequencing, student progression, and graduation planning.

• Experience developing and implementing advising procedures, staff training, communication resources, or service-delivery standards related to international or education abroad student support.

• Experience providing leadership within an academic advising, international education, education abroad, or undergraduate student services unit.

• Experience using student information systems, advising technologies, reporting tools, and customer relationship management systems.

• Experience using data, assessment, or student feedback to evaluate and improve programs and services.

• Facilitation, presentation, or teaching experience in a college or university setting.
