Position Summary

The Department of Small Animal Clinical Sciences includes over 40 faculty with a state-of-the art Veterinary Medical Center (VMC). The VMC supports outstanding patient care with a superb team of highly qualified veterinary technicians to support the general and specialty services. It is equipped with GI, pulmonary, and genitourinary endoscopic equipment, laparoscopy, 64 slice helical CT, digital cinefluoroscopy, 3.0 Tesla MRI, nuclear medicine, and a linear accelerator, amongst others.  We are well-represented in supporting specialty services including 24/7 emergency and critical care, urgent care, community medicine, anesthesiology, cardiology, primary care, diagnostic imaging, interventional radiology, sports medicine and rehabilitation, ophthalmology, orthopedic surgery, soft tissue surgery, medical oncology, theriogenology, and dermatology. 

The Internal Medicine service is focused on exceptional instruction and patient care, supported by a busy caseload and experienced faculty. The successful candidate’s responsibilities will include management of referral cases, supervision and clinical instruction of house officers and students, and a lesser commitment to scholarly contributions and teaching (both pre-clinical and clinical) in the candidate’s area of interest or expertise. Our Health Programs (HP) appointment system is dynamic and generally associated with a heavier clinical commitment than tenure stream faculty while still maintaining ample time for teaching and scholarly interests.  The extent of participation in the pre-clinical teaching curriculum as well as expected contributions to specialty service leadership is dependent on the interests and strengths of the applicant. Health Programs faculty have full college voting rights and the main difference from tenure stream faculty is that a collaborative research focus is acceptable whereas independent research programs are expected for tenure stream faculty. Merit evaluations and promotions are based on the faculty member’s performance within their assigned duties. 

Michigan State University has both Colleges of Human Medicine and Ostopathic Medicine on campus providing unique and exciting opportunities for collaborative activities.  Such activities are encouraged at both the Departmental and College level, and support is available for grant writing, locating external funding resources, and processing grant submissions. Internal funding opportunities are also available through endowed research funds. The College of Veterinary Medicine has active faculty development and mentorship programs to facilitate career progression.

Required Degree

Doctorate -DVM- Veterinary Medicine

Minimum Requirements

Applicants must have a Doctorate in Veterinary Medicine (DVM) or equivalent degree and be eligible for licensure to practice veterinary medicine in Michigan.  Board certification in the American College of Veterinary Internal Medicine or European College of Veterinary Internal Medicine is preferred but board-eligible candidates will be considered.   The candidate must have excellent communication skills and the ability to work cooperatively within a team.  

Desired Qualifications

Previous preclinical teaching experience or an advanced research degree or focused research experience will also be favorably considered but are not required.
