Position Summary(Basic Job Function)

This is a temporary or an on-call position. Provides professional support. Responsibilities may include general business, science, medical, agricultural or other professional support functions. Term: Temps can work two (2) nine (9) month terms with a week break in service in between and at the end of the second term terminate for three (3) months or switch to an on-call. On-Call allowed to work 1039 hours in any twelve (12) month period.

Unit Position Summary

The Michigan State University-Hurley Children’s Hospital Pediatric Public Health Initiative in the C.S. Mott Department of Public Health at Michigan State University invites applications for Summer 2026 internships based in Flint, Michigan. 

The mission of the Pediatric Public Health Initiative (PPHI) is to improve the outcomes of Flint children. Through clinical and community programs, partnerships, advocacy, training, and evaluation, the Pediatric Public Health Initiative strives for health equity and serves as a national resource for best practices.

Interns will assist with programming and research activities for Rx Kids, the first community-wide unconditional cash prescription program in the United States. Rx Kids seeks to advance health equity by proactively addressing maternal and infant economic instability. The research team is focused on the impact of Rx Kids on maternal and infant health, families’ basic needs/economic stability, process/service utilization, community-level impact, and systems change.

Interns will support a range of research and programmatic activities, including: 
• Recruiting and tracking study participants via phone calls, mailings, and electronic communications. This will include preparing over 5,000 mailings and each intern making over 1,000 phone calls.
• Testing surveys in REDCap database
• Responding to participant inquiries and resolving issues
• Collecting, entering and verifying data
• Coordinating with study participants and staff
• Conducting data quality checks
• Performing literature reviews and writing summaries with citations
• Preparing reports and presentation materials
• Supporting community engagement
• Other research or project activities to support work, as applicable

Throughout the summer, interns will participate in weekly team-building and professional development focused on careers related to public health.

Internship details:
• Location: Michigan State University Flint Campus, Flint, MI. In-person attendance required (remote work is not available).
• Dates: May 18 – August 7, 2026. Candidates must be able to work the first and last week of the internship.
• Schedule: Monday – Friday, 36 – 40 hours per week during regular business hours
• Parking: On-site parking is not provided; interns must arrange their own parking accommodations, which may require payment
• Compensation: Undergraduate students is $17/hr and graduate students and recent college graduates is $19/hr.

Interviews will be conducted in March/April 2026 and offers made in April/May 2026.

Desired Qualifications

• Enrollment in or recent completion of an undergraduate or graduate program
• Basic knowledge of web-based communication, competent keyboarding, high level of comfort with development of documents, spreadsheets, and presentations, including basic proficiency in the following software: Microsoft Office Word, Microsoft Office Excel, Microsoft Office Outlook, Microsoft Office PowerPoint
• Able to work independently in an organized and efficient manner
• Strong oral and written skills with the ability to write and conduct daily communications
• Comfortable making phone calls and engaging with participants (including cold calls)
• Connection to or demonstrated interest in Flint
