Position Summary

The postdoctoral scholar will join a collaborative research team in the College of Natural Science and the CREATE for STEM Institute to support research on AI-assisted formative assessment and feedback in high school science classrooms. The position focuses on analyzing student responses to three-dimensional science learning tasks, including written explanations and student-generated models, and contributing to the development and refinement of generative AI–based feedback. The postdoctoral scholar will participate in classroom implementation studies examining how students and teachers use AI-generated feedback to support science learning. The initial appointment is for one year, with the possibility of renewal for a second year based on performance and funding.


The postdoctoral scholar will work closely with the project PI, Dr. Kevin Haudek and collaborate with other project faculty to: 1) analyze student responses to assessment tasks using AI-supported tools and rubrics; 2) develop and refine formative feedback for student explanations and models; 3) help design, test, and refine GenAI feedback tools, including prompt development and review of AI-generated outputs;; 4) collect, organize, and analyze classroom data, including student engagement and performance; 5) conduct and analyze think-alouds and/or interviews with high school students and teachers about feedback and the use of the AI system; 6) support teacher-facing implementation activities and professional development as needed; 7) assist with project management and 8) contribute to project reports, publications, and conference presentations.


The postdoctoral scholar will collaborate with faculty, other postdoctoral researchers and graduate students in Michigan State University's CREATE for STEM Institute (http://www.create4stem.msu.edu/).

Required Degree

Doctorate -science education or a Ph.D. in a science discipline

Minimum Requirements

Candidates are expected to hold a Ph.D. in science education or a Ph.D. in a science discipline, preferably in biology, chemistry or closely related field with relevant educational research experience.

Desired Qualifications

Candidates with experience using AI to support student science learning, designing and analyzing assessments, conducting discipline‑based education research in chemistry or biology, and applying mixed‑methods research approaches.
