Position Summary

  1. Patrol land governed by MSU Board of Trustees on foot, motorcycle, bicycle or patrol vehicle utilizing State laws and University Ordinances.
  2. Preserve law and order, prevent crime, and protect life and property of students, faculty, staff and visitors.
  3. Affect an arrest, forcibly if necessary, using handcuffs and other restraints in accordance with department-approved tactics.
  4. Pursue fleeing subjects on foot, bicycle or patrol vehicle in accordance with department policy and procedure.
  5. Perform investigations and conduct legal searches of subjects to detect potential weapons or illegal contraband.
  6. Operate an emergency vehicle during both day and night shift hours; in emergency and pursuit situations involving speeds in excess of the posted speed limit, while exercising due care and caution; and in congested traffic, hazardous road conditions, and environmental conditions, including but not limited to, fog, smoke, rain, ice and snow, within the guidelines set forth by department policy and procedure.
  7. Communicate clearly and effectively over law enforcement radio channels while responding to calls for service and self-initiating activity. Must be able to effectively communicate, read, and write in English.
  8. Load, aim, and fire handguns, rifles, and other agency-specific firearms from a variety of positions in training and real life scenarios that justify the use of deadly force while regulating emotions under extreme stress.
  9. Ability to maintain composure during rapidly evolving situations involving potentially uncooperative subjects.
  10. Ability to deescalate situations with proper verbal commands and appropriately articulating and acting upon situations that require elevating use of force within department policy and procedure.
  11. Must possess adequate word processing skills in order to prepare written reports utilizing proper spelling and grammar. Must also have reasonable computer skills as many functions of patrol utilize various computer software programs.
  12. Effectively carry out community team policing functions such as: office hours, programs, and other various events to strengthen our bond with the community in which we serve.
  13. Participate in training sessions such as: legal update, defensive tactics, firearms, and various other annual training requirements in accordance with Michigan State University.
  14. Physically exert oneself in the performance of police officer duties such as: climb stairs, jump over walls, run, bend, twist, reach, crawl, kneel, sit for prolonged periods, move/push/pull/lift heavy objects/persons potentially exceeding 50lbs in weight.
  15. Must accept and understand the nature of law enforcement as a 24-hour on-call profession for emergencies as deemed by the Chief or his designee.
  16. Must understand that with very few exceptions, every home football game is a mandatory workday for MSU police officers. Other events such as March Madness, large concerts, or any additional event determined by the Police Chief may require a mandatory workday for civil disorder duties.

Minimum Requirements

Knowledge equivalent to that which normally would be acquired by completing a four-year college degree program, or attainment of degree within six months of hire; six months to one year of related and progressively more responsible work experience; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

Additionally, applicants:

  1. Must be either:

    1. Certified as a Police Officer in the State of Michigan
    2. Certifiable as a Police Officer in the State of Michigan, subject to verification or re-verification by a Michigan Commission on Law Enforcement Standards (MCOLES) approved training academy
    3. Currently enrolled in an MCOLES approved training academy and certifiable by date of hire
  2. Must be at least 21 years of age.
  3. Must possess a Bachelor’s Degree from an accredited higher education institution
  4. Must not have any prior felony arrest or convictions (including expunged), involved in domestic assault as a suspect, alcohol related arrests (Drunk & Disorderly, Open Intoxicants, Minor in Possession, Operating While Intoxicated, etc. within last two years), two or more misdemeanor appearances (within last five years)
  5. Must possess good moral character as determined by a favorable comprehensive background investigation covering but not limited to:

    1. Personal References
    2. Prior Employment History
    3. Professional References
    4. Academic History
    5. Financial History
    6. Residence History
    7. Extensive Records Check (locally, nationally and worldwide, if applicable)
    8. Military History (if applicable)
    9. Personal Conduct
    10. Moral Character
