Unit Position Summary

MSU Landscape Services has been maintaining campus as a living, learning laboratory since 1905. We are responsible for all aspects of landscape installation and maintenance, snow removal, signage, hardscape maintenance, golf course maintenance, and general repairs.

As a part-time employee at Forest Akers Golf Courses, you will play an integral role maintaining two of the best public golf courses in Michigan by assisting in a wide variety of routine manual labor tasks such as mowing, irrigation, golf course turf maintenance, and more. Work outdoors with a collaborative team and take advantage of discounted golf and range privileges after hours! This part-time position is great for anyone looking to start their journey in golf course landscaping or greenskeeping, or for those with experience looking to pick up some additional work. This position is expected to work up to 29 hours per week starting at $16.50 per hour from approximately April through November.

Essential Job Duties & Responsibilities:

Assist with general landscaping tasks; mow, water, fertilize, litter control, cut weeds, brush, and grass using hand and power equipment; recognize field/lawn issues; install landscape plant material, signs, site furniture, edging and boulders; shovel, rake, grade, dig, back-fill; haul materials. Operate equipment used in landscape maintenance and construction.

Assist with installation of irrigation systems, topsoil, seed and sod lawn and turf areas; transplant and move trees, shrubs, and flowers; perform regular maintenance to light and medium-weight vehicles such as oil checks, grease fittings, tire pressure checks; transport supplies, materials, tools, and equipment work sites using university vehicles; update and maintain MSU's plant maintenance database.

Issue, receive, and store supplies and equipment; maintain and install erosion control devices; assist in identifying and treating plant disease, insect, and other related problems; shovel snow, sand and de-ice walkways; assist in monitoring working areas to assure compliance with safety precautions and proper working methods; use email; install tree protection fencing; maintain roads and walkways; participate in MSU football tailgate clean up.

Minimum Requirements:

Casual knowledge of tools, methods, materials, and equipment used in grounds maintenance; must wear protective footwear requested such as a leather work boot; applicant must have a good driving record and submit their operator's license number on their application form for a motor vehicle check; must be able to work in variable weather conditions to include sever weather; frequent lifting of 26 to 75 pounds with occasional lifting over 75 pounds; knowledge of basic computer terminology and operations and the ability to use e-mail and the internet is required.

Desired Qualifications

Experience in grounds maintenance; possession of Michigan Commercial Pesticide Applicator License.
