Position Summary

The Michigan State University Veterinary Diagnostic Laboratory is seeking a Laboratory Technologist in the Clinical Pathology Laboratory section to perform and evaluate complex chemical and microscopic tests to provide timely, accurate diagnostic data for use by veterinarians; perform clinical laboratory procedures in the areas of clinical chemistry, immunohematology, hematology, coagulation, immunology, and urinalysis. Work hours vary including evenings, weekends and holidays. Duties associated with this position involve exposure to veterinary biological specimens, working with hazardous waste, use of regulated chemicals and biological materials, and working on a video display terminal greater than 25 percent of the time.

Reporting to and working closely with the Clinical Pathology section manager, the Laboratory Technologist will be responsible for: 40% - Performs lab tests on specimens using automated and manual methods. 40% - Evaluates laboratory results for discrepancies in order to ensure proper reporting. Enters pertinent information into the computer in order to generate results. 10% - Performs preventive maintenance and minor repairs of complex lab equipment and calibrates instruments in order to ensure reliable results. Maintains QA/QC records, identifies variances, resolves QA/QC issues. Troubleshoots as necessary. 5% - Participates in problem-solving, laboratory policy making, and information distribution. Participates in VDL activities, staff meetings, SOP's drafting, and process improvement efforts. 5% - Consults with veterinarians and other clients in order to provide information and lab results. Provides information that assists the client in their interpretation of test results.

Minimum Requirements

Knowledge equivalent to that which normally would be acquired by completing a four year college degree program in Medical Technology or related science field; one to three years of related and progressively more responsible or expansive work experience in basic laboratory techniques; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

Desired Qualifications

Board certified as a MT or CLS (ASCP or BOR) or eligible as MT or CL S (ASCP or BOR) within six months of hire. OR VTS credentialing in veterinary clinical pathology by the AVCPT within 4 years of hire.

Working knowledge and experience with Advia 2120, Beckman AU 680, Nova blood gas system, and Diagnostica Stago Compact hemostasis analyzer, veterinary hematology, and immunohematology; three years of generalist work experience; demonstrated technical writing skills including writing procedures using NCCLS guidelines;

The ideal candidate for this role will be team oriented, collaborative by nature, customer service focused, independent problem solver, and have a positive attitude, while maintaining a professional demeanor; excellent communication written and oral communication and interpersonal skills; ability to function as a team member within and across multiple levels of operations. Experience working in a laboratory environment requiring specific safety and security awareness training; quality assurance experience.
