Position Summary

Hire, train, schedule, supervise, and evaluate part-time team members, including Adventure Recreation Climbing Wall, Customer Service Assistants, Instructors, Route Setters, Maintenance Assistants, Sailing Center Attendants, and other part-time team members as needed; monitor all staff certifications per compliance standards; assign and delegate tasks to part-time team members; direct day-to-day and long-term operations of Adventure Recreation and Sailing Center programs and the development of new program offerings; lead, conduct, and evaluate Adventure Recreation and Sailing Center programs; make program updates based on current research; conduct quality improvement projects and assessment of areas; increase participation of campus community and seek additional uses to drive revenue; oversee and manage the outdoor gear rental program located in RSFS facilities, including managing and maintenance of all equipment associated with adventure recreation including kayaks, canoes, personal notation devices, and large quantity of general camping equipment; research and recommend potential purchases of equipment and items associated with the operations of the Adventure Recreation, Sailing Center and Climbing Wall programs; develop and manage the electronic system which tracks belay endorsements that are applicable to the RSFS climbing wall; serve as primary support for the management, application. and uses of department IT systems and software for all uses related to Adventure Recreation and Sailing Center; lead and manage routine updates to all Adventure Recreation and Sailing Center employee manuals; lead and collaborate with campus units and the general community to promote and implement climbing and other adventure activities; identify potential risks associated with the Climbing Wall and maintain standards to ensure a safe environment for patrons; responsible for documenting facility usage information related to facility rentals; promote and publicize unit programs and achievements in conjunction with the ASG Communications Manager; support the efforts of department-wide initiatives. processes, and procedures; review, in conjunction with the supervising Associate Director of Financial Operations, matters relating to fees, supervision, budget, and fiscal responsibilities; create collaborative programming with other RSFS program areas when needed; compile information and data for various monthly, mid-year, and annual reports as requested by the Associate Director; develop programs and departmental objectives and long-range planning; serve on unit, department, division and/or University committees as assigned; enforce and maintain RSFS policies and procedures as they pertain to usage of facilities related to Adventure Recreation and Sailing Center; assist with night and weekend coverage as needed. 

All positions in RHS are designated as critical status. In the event of a university closure, modification, or suspension of operations due to snow or other emergency conditions, you will be expected to make all reasonable attempts to report to work as scheduled for the duration of the closure/suspension. Minimum Requirements

Knowledge equivalent to that which normally would acquired by completing one or two years of post-Bachelor’s degree work, such as, a Master’s in Business Administration, Parks & Recreation, Sports Management, Kinesiology, Exercise Science, Health & Physical Education, or a related field; one to three years’ experience overseeing outdoor recreation programs, such as supervision of a rock-climbing wall or outdoor equipment rental program; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

Desired Qualifications

Certification as a Wilderness First Responder, Climbing Wall Instructor thru the Climbing Wall Association (CWA), American Mountain Guides Association (AMGA), Rout Setting,  Wilderness First Responder, American Canoe Association (ACA) Solo Instructor Certification, Association for Challenge Course Technology (ACCT) Level I or Level II, or US Sailing Association Instructor Certification; comprehensive knowledge of adventure recreation, sailing, climbing walls, and bouldering; previous development and facilitation experience in team building, leadership programs, or experiential education; previous supervision experience, including hiring, training, and evaluating;  experience working with students including those with vision, hearing, and physical disabilities; strong written and verbal skills to establish effective working relationships with employees, faculty, staff, students and community patrons; ability to multi-task priorities and meet deadlines; strong commitment to diversity and developing a comprehensive understanding of the needs of a diverse population of students and user groups.
