Position Summary

As a member of the HR-Benefits office, this position will assist the MSU faculty, staff, students, and retirees by responding to benefit-related inquiries and providing support for benefit transactions. This includes educating customers on benefit coverage and assisting with the new hire and annual open enrollment processes.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Respond to and investigate inquiries related to benefits, eligibility, and enrollment through in-person consultations, phone calls, and emails.
  • Advise customers and departments on benefit options, opportunities, and rights.
  • Verify information on benefit-related forms submitted by customers.
  • Conduct research, support special projects, and assist with outreach and educational efforts within Benefit Administration.
  • Utilize HR systems such as SAP/EBS, KFS, and Genesys Cloud to manage and process benefit-related inquiries and transactions.
  • Ensure compliance with state and federal regulations (e.g. Section 125 plan document, COBRA, ACA, HIPAA) and adhere to business and data rules and union contract requirements.
  • Prioritize and manage benefit transactions to ensure timely processing and compliance with enrollment deadlines.

Remote Work Capability:

This position is based in East Lansing, MI, on the campus of Michigan State University. MSU Human Resources embraces flexible work options, and this position is hybrid-friendly with regular onsite work required four days per week. Schedule adjustments are subject to supervisory approval and must align with individual, team, and departmental goals.

Minimum Requirements

Knowledge equivalent to that which normally would be acquired by completing a four-year college degree program in human resources or a related field; six months to one year of related and progressively more responsible or expansive work experience in a human resources role, specializing in benefits administration; or an equivalent combination of education and experience. 

Desired Qualifications

  • HR Certification such as CEBS, CHRS, PHR, SHRM-CP, etc.
  • Strong customer service skills, organizational abilities, and attention to detail.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills with the ability to handle sensitive and confidential information.
  • Ability to manage time effectively, prioritize tasks and work independently.
  • Familiarity with health and welfare benefit programs, practices, and procedures
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office, online databases, and web-based research tools; ability to quickly learn new systems and tools.
  • Demonstrates a commitment to creating a positive and inclusive work environment where team members’ unique ideas and perspectives are valued.
  • Knowledge of local, state, and federal benefit-related laws and the ability to stay current with changing regulations.
