Assistant Director
Position Summary
The Assistant Director for Student and Scholar Success is a member of the Office for International Students and Scholars (OISS) leadership team, which provides leadership for the overall unit. This position has direct accountability for engagement initiatives that promote student and scholar success as well as leading and supervising full-time OISS Advisors and student employees. The Assistant Director supports global DEI initiatives including intercultural education and training. The Assistant Director collaborates with a wide variety of campus partners including but not limited to International Studies and Programs, Student Life and Engagement, Office of the Associate Provost for Undergraduate Education, and the Graduate School. The Assistant Director collaborates with and represents OISS in various community initiatives. The Assistant Director serves as a Designated School Office and Alternate Responsible Officer.
Hybrid work statement: OISS is currently operating under a hybrid modality structure, with staff working three days in person and two days remotely. This structure is subject to change at any time.
Essential Duties & Responsibilities:
Lead OISS student and scholar success initiatives
- Lead the student and scholar success team within OISS consisting of direct full-time professional staff, shared full-time professional staff, graduate assistant(s) and student workers
- Lead OISS engagement activities including but not limited to OISS Coffee Hours, Global Festival, day trips, etc.
- Lead international student orientations, student organization assistance, and student leadership programs
- Collaborate with the Career Services Network on career development initiatives for international students
- Work closely with the OISS scholar team on programming to support scholar success
- Oversee front desk staff, social media engagement, the OISS Weekly, and other public facing communication
- Develop and lead global DEI initiatives including intercultural education and training for the campus community
Engage with student success initiatives across campus
- Work closely with the OISS Advocacy and Outreach Coordinator to support student success
- Collaborate with campus and community partners; represent OISS on various committees; develop and implement collaborative engagement activities
- Actively participate in campus committees such as the Campus Student Success Group
- Partner with the Office of Admissions and other campus units to support yield events and pre-departure orientations
Administration and supervision
- Supervise a team of Engagement Coordinators and student employees; conduct regular performance reviews; provide training as needed; support professional development opportunities
- Assist the Director with development student and scholar success initiatives
- Serve as a member of the OISS Leadership team; attend regular meetings; discuss departmental issues including staffing, budget, and department initiatives
- Represent OISS at various meetings and functions, as needed
- Serves a backup Designated School Official (DSO) and Alternate Responsible Officer (ARO)
Minimum Requirements
Knowledge normally acquired by completing one or two years of post-bachelor degree work such as a Master’s in Social Science, Communication, Education or Humanities degree; five to eight years of related and progressively more responsible or expansive work experience in immigration laws and regulations, cross-cultural counseling, administration and fluency in a second language; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
Desired Qualifications
Five years of experience in international higher education; experience interacting with people from varied cultural backgrounds; experience in team leadership, project management, and website utilization; or an equivalent combination of education and experience. Pursuant to requirements of the U.S. Department of Homeland Security and U.S. Department of State, this position requires that the successful candidate be a U.S. citizen, lawful permanent resident, refugee, asylee, or lawful temporary resident.
Experience advising international students and scholars; experience conducting research, needs assessments, and satisfaction surveys; experience with global DEI and intercultural education and training and program development; demonstrated successful collaborations in a higher education setting; demonstrated excellent communication and presentation skills
