Position Summary

The Admissions Counselor will be responsible for facilitating key elements of applicants’ pathway towards matriculation at CHM. By engaging in recruitment and leading pre-matriculation programming, the individual in this position will identify and counsel applicants interested in learning more about programs offered at CHM. The individual will assist with the logistical implementation of select admissions pathway programs, notably those affiliated with Michigan State University undergraduate students and community college partners. They will also oversee pathway programming for disadvantaged high school and college students towards medical careers, with a focus on central and southeastern Michigan urban communities. As part of the admissions process, the individual will review and suggest preliminary decisions on medical school applications, assist with the coordination and execution of interviews, and attend admissions committee meetings to gain perspective on committee decisions, especially related to the need to provide feedback to unsuccessful CHM applicants. The individual will supervise on-call application screeners, work cooperatively and collaboratively with other Admissions Counselors, and serve as a resource to the Assistant Dean for Admissions.

 

This position can be based at either the MSU Clinical Center in East Lansing or the Secchia Center in Grand Rapids and will require occasional travel to CHM community campuses and other regions of MI for meetings and recruitment events. Therefore, the employee must live or be willing to relocate to a community within daily driving commuting distance (<60 miles) from East Lansing or Grand Rapids, MI. This position will allow for a hybrid remote/on-site work model once the employee fully acclimates to the work environment. Finally, the position will include some required evening or weekend hours at select events throughout the year.

Unit Specific Education/Experience/Skills

Knowledge equivalent to that which normally would be acquired by completing a four year college degree program; six months to one year of related and progressively more responsible or expansive work experience in admissions, counseling, public relations, student services or related area, including implementing programs and schedules, making formal presentations, and working with the public; experience with database, spreadsheet, desk top publishing and/or presentation software; or an equivalent combination of education and experience; may require conversational proficiency in a foreign language.

Desired Qualifications

Bachelor's and/or Master’s degree related to higher education, student affairs, communications, or related writing-intensive field; demonstration of healthy, collaborative work relationships with guidance counselors and college/university department staff/faculty/students; demonstrated experience communicating with and forging healthy, productive relationships with urban-based communities; demonstrated successful experience in implementing recruitment specific programs; excellent reading speed and comprehension; ability to analyze data and make recommendations; experience with prioritizing workflow; effective oral, written, and interpersonal skills; ability to maintain confidentiality and work with protected personal information; a minimum of one year experience in student services at the college/university level; demonstrated computer skills including proficiency with Microsoft Office applications including, Word, Excel, Outlook, and PowerPoint.
