Position Summary(Basic Job Function)

This is a temporary or an on-call position. Provides technical support. Responsibilities may include computer programming or operations; research support; medical patient care; technical equipment maintenance, repair, fabrication or operation; or other technical support functions.

Unit Position Summary

Employee will be responsible for coordinating daily field activities and work with 3 additional field crew members. This individual will also serve as the direct point of contact for the project principle investigator. Will require travel and overnight stays throughout the duration of the project.

Duties include:

  • Navigate to (using GPS) and deploy ARUs at approximately 70 sites across northern Michigan. Later in season, recover ARUs.
  • Retrieve, deploy, and maintain remote cameras for sampling wildlife on a subset of sites.
  • Maintain and repair deer exclosures on a subset of sites.
  • Daily data entry.
  • Must be comfortable navigating to remote sites with compass and Avenza maps. Sites can be challenging to walk into and through, with 2-3 miles of walking required per day through brambles and logging debris slash from recent harvest left on some sites. Biting insects are also a challenge.
  • valid driver's license

Desired Qualifications

  • Successful candidates will be flexible, independently motivated, and show strong initiative.
  • The ability to communicate with public land managers, navigate using GPS, and work well in teams (especially paired with a partner).
  • Candidates must be willing and physically able to spend long days in the field, sometimes walking several miles and/or navigating difficult managed forest conditions at experimental sites.
  • Candidates must be comfortable driving a 4-wheel drive truck on logging roads.

Work Hours

Standard workdays will begin around 8:00 am and end at 5:00 – 6:00. Crews can decide to work 5 – 8-hour days or 4 – 10-hour days
