Position Summary(Basic Job Function)

This is a temporary or an on-call position. Provides technical support. Responsibilities may include computer programming or operations; research support; medical patient care; technical equipment maintenance, repair, fabrication or operation; or other technical support functions.

Unit Position Summary

The MSU Water Alliance is seeking a technical aide for a flagship research project involving plastics clean-up on the Grand River.

Assists in data collection and overseeing field operations for Water Alliance flagship project focused on plastic clean-up in the Grand River; analyzes resultant data for the purpose of fulfilling project requirements.  General research, data analysis and communications support for flagship project.

Responsibilities will also include reviewing and editing science and research write ups; support of some administrative tasks related to the unit in order to assist in accomplishing the goals of the Water Alliance.

Characteristic Duties – Responsibilities

 

  • Compiles, summarizes and assists in data analysis and entry to help prepare flagship project reports.
  • Regularly attends meetings with research group on flagship project.
  • Facilitates, prepares, and distributes agenda materials and records minutes for regular and special meetings for flagship project.
  • Oversees field needs and assists in ordering materials, supplies and equipment for flagship project.
  • Performs field work for the purpose of data collection on flagship project.
  • Assists in coordinating research field operations to meet research goals.
  • Receives, collects and processes complex and diverse information in order to provide information for external agencies.
  • Prepares and/or assists in developing and compiling analytical reports.
  • Interacts with University personnel, students, and external agencies in order to verify information and ensure that records and resultant actions are correct.
  • Types, edits and proofreads correspondence, letters, proposals and other materials.
  • Completes a wide range of computer tasks, including correspondence, reports, tables, agreements and other documentation to assist with the goals of the Water Alliance.
  • Types, edits and proofreads correspondence, letters, proposals and other materials.
  • Reviews and edits science and research write ups to assist with the goals of the Water Alliance.
  • Consults with supervisor in order to support planning and designing of field experiments for flagship project.
  • Acts as a resource person to internal and external individuals regarding flagship project.
  • Researches literature in order to maintain a current knowledge of research methods and terminology for the flagship project.

 

Responsibilities will also include reviewing and editing science and research write ups; support of some administrative tasks related to the unit in order to assist in accomplishing the goals of the Water Alliance. 

 

60% General research and data analysis support for flagship project.

15% Reviewing and editing science and research write ups 

15% Administrative support to assist in accomplishing the goals of the Water Alliance.

10% Overseeing field operation of project.

 

This will be an on-call position up to 19 hours per week. 

Work hours:

  • Monday to Friday, 9a – 4p

Desired Qualifications

Strong organizational skills to be able to manage, prioritize multiple tasks; ability to work independently and as a part of a team.

Bachelor’s degree in science, engineering or similar field of study preferably with an understanding of different types of plastic packaging. Experience with Adobe Illustrator and/or Photoshop for the purpose of creating info graphics/illustrations/graphics to communicate and educate the public on single use plastics as well as provide information on the flagship project goals and outcomes, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
