Position Summary

The Gender and Sexuality Campus Center (GSCC) Assistant Director is responsible for creating and implementing outreach programs as well as individual and community development programs that support student success; oversee volunteer and intern recruitment, training, and supervision of student employees and volunteers; responsible for the continued development and implementation of GSCC signature programming including Pride Prom, Lavender Reception, and The Queering Racial Justice Summit among others; assists with designing and facilitating educational trainings and workshops; works with the Director to develop and implement ongoing assessment efforts, and provide leadership and supervision of The GSCC and staff in absence of the Director; leads and works collaboratively with GSCC staff, campus partners and community supports to plan and implement events and programming; designs, implements, facilitates educational and training programs and workshops to enhance cultural awareness among students, staff, and faculty within the University community; consults with other Student Affairs units, academic units, and university leadership and external constituents on issues of sexual identity, gender identity, and gender expression; supports programming that is responsive to the intersectionality of marginalized identities; develops and implements learning outcomes-based assessment for all programs, workshops, and educational opportunities; advises and supports The Alliance of Queer and Ally Students and other MSU LGBTQIA2S+ student organizations as needed; recruits, trains, and supervises support staff, graduate students, interns, and student employees and volunteers within the GSCC; works collaboratively with other units in the DEIB Department, the Division of Student Affairs and across the University to develop and implement shared initiatives responding to student needs; builds networks with external and internal stakeholders by serving on and leading various relevant university-wide committees and initiatives; develops and implements procedures and/or relevant policies; conducts special projects and programs as requested. Hybrid remote work schedule requiring on-site work and potential for 1-2 days of remote work.   

The GSCC at Michigan State University leads and collaborates on University-wide initiatives that enhance campus climate and academic and support services for MSU students, centering those who identify as LGBTQIA2S+; we serve the entire campus community by helping all students, faculty, and staff to thrive in a diverse world by developing allies across differences. 

All positions in SLE are designated as critical status. In the event of a university closure, modification, or suspension of operations due to snow or other emergency condition, persons in this position are expected to make all reasonable attempts to report to work as scheduled for the duration of the closure/suspension. If a person has an approved remote work agreement to work a portion of their normally scheduled work hours remotely, they may be called upon to work on-site to serve the MSU community.  

 

 

Minimum Requirements

Knowledge equivalent to that which normally would be acquired by completing one or two years of post-bachelor degree work, such as a Masters in Student Affairs Administration, Public Administration, or a Behavioral Science field; one to three years of related and progressively more responsible or expansive work experience in developing and implementing programs, program assessment, supervising and coordinating staff, or an equivalent combination of education and experience. 

Desired Qualifications

Demonstrated experience and familiarity with both the LBGTQIA2S+ community, issues faced and their intersections with other identities; strong written and oral communication skills; strong public speaking and group facilitation skills, strong understanding of leadership to empower others; high level of intercultural competency and experience with developing intercultural leaders; and experience fostering donor relationships.
