Position Summary

The Office of Student Support and Accountability (OSSA) centers care, equity, integrity, and learning in processes that emphasize the importance of working with students and the community. OSSA's work includes student and organizational conduct, academic integrity, care and intervention, conflict resolution, medical amnesty, and medical leave and return. 

We are seeking a Student Conduct Investigator to lead impartial, equitable investigations into alleged student misconduct. This may include student organizations (including fraternities, sororities, club sports, and other registered student groups), individual, and academic misconduct. This role supports a campus environment that prioritizes student safety, organizational accountability, education, and community rights and responsibilities. An ideal candidate has experience in investigations, conflict resolution, university operations, or student affairs, familiarity with federal regulations guiding higher education combined with the ability to work independently, excellent oral and written communication skills, effective rapport building, detail orientation, and experience both working with students, faculty and staff. 

The Student Conduct Investigator leads impartial, equitable investigations into alleged student misconduct. This may include student organizations (including fraternities, sororities, club sports, and other registered student groups), individual, and academic misconduct. This role supports a campus environment that prioritizes student safety, organizational accountability, education, and community rights and responsibilities. The investigator applies a trauma-informed, student-centered lens to all aspects of case management and upholds the office values of integrity, learning, equity, and care.

Work environment: 

· The OSSA team functions collaboratively with a focus on restorative practices

· The Student Conduct Investigator reports to an Assistant Director within OSSA

· This position is remote-friendly.

Key Themes & Responsibilities

Investigative Excellence

• Conduct thorough, prompt, and neutral investigations including hazing, alcohol and drug violations, discrimination, and group misconduct.
• Develop and execute investigation plans: identify key issues through case intake, interview appropriate parties, gather and assess evidence, and determine findings of fact. This includes interviewing individuals, taking accurate notes, and detailing summaries of interviews.
• Maintain detailed and accurate records and prepare comprehensive and timely investigative reports aligned with University policies and applicable state/federal guidelines.

Process Administration

• Communicates, interprets, and adjudicates University policies as applicable to the Office of Student Support & Accountability.
• Collaborate with student conduct staff to recommend and implement meaningful sanctions that promote harm repair, organizational learning, and risk reduction.
• Monitor compliance with sanctions and support long-term culture change within the campus community.
• Refer students to appropriate campus offices or external agencies
• Serve as a Hearing Board Advisor and/or a University Hearing Officer.

Collaboration & Community Engagement

• Serve as a liaison to campus partners including Fraternity and Sorority Life, Office of Spartan Experiences, Recreational Sports and Fitness, Athletics, Office for Civil Rights and Title IX Education and Compliance, Residential and Hospitality Services, University Health and Wellness, colleges, and the MSU Department of Police and Public Safety.
• Provide consultation and partner during conduct adjudication with faculty, staff, advisors, student leaders, and external stakeholders (e.g., (inter)national headquarters, alumni, families, attorneys, governmental agencies) on student conduct processes and organizational accountability.
• Build strong relationships with community partners to foster a shared commitment to student wellness, inclusion, and accountability.

Education & Prevention

• Support proactive educational initiatives around hazing prevention, group accountability, risk management, and ethical leadership.
• Deliver workshops and training to student organizations, advisors, and campus staff on investigation procedures, reporting obligations, and best practices.
• Promote a culture of compliance and responsible community behavior within students and student groups.
• Stay informed about current trends in investigation practices, conflict resolution, and regulations affecting higher education institutions.

Assessment & Institutional Strategy

• Track trends and generate data reports to inform policy and prevention efforts.
• Contribute to office-wide strategic planning, continuous improvement, and assessments.
• Serve on institutional committees and represent the office.
• Promote the office values of integrity, equity, learning, and care through continuous improvement of office practices and policies.

Minimum Requirements

Knowledge equivalent to that which normally would be acquired by completing a four-year college degree program in Student Affairs Administration, Developmental Psychology, Educational Psychology, Social Work, Training and Development, or Counselor Education; three to five years’ experience in student conduct, fraternity and sorority life, student organizations, interpersonal violence prevention or a related field; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

Desired Qualifications

Knowledge equivalent to that which normally would be acquired by completing one or two years of post-bachelor degree work such as a Master's in Student Affairs Administration, Developmental Psychology, Educational Psychology, Social Work, Training and Development, or Counselor Education; three to five years of related and progressively more responsible or expansive work experience in student conduct, fraternity and sorority life, student organizations, interpersonal violence prevention, or a related field; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

Experience with:

• Training development and delivery.
• Electronic case management systems (e.g., Advocate).
• Navigating complex institutional structures.
• Supporting students and families in crisis using trauma-informed care.
• Working with graduate student populations.
• Working with faculty, staff, and alumni populations.
• Strong administrative, oral, and written communication skills.
• Certifications or training in areas such as Mental Health First Aid, suicide prevention, de-escalation, threat assessment, restorative justice, bystander intervention, or active listening.
