Working/Functional Title
Senior Occupational Industrial Hygienist
Position Summary
This senior-level position is responsible for supporting workplace health and safety for over 25,000 university employees by managing existing safety programs and using recognized industrial hygiene methods and practices to evaluate and assure workplace safety. Independently works to investigate safety and health concerns, from initial contact through corrective action. Maintains records necessary to demonstrate compliance with applicable Federal, State, and local Health, Safety and Environmental regulations. Conducts training necessary to support university operations.
Minimum Requirements
Knowledge equivalent to that which normally would be acquired by completing a four-year college degree program in Environmental Health and Safety, Industrial Hygiene, or a science-related discipline; three to five years related and progressively more responsible or expansive work experience in industrial hygiene, occupational health/safety and chemical safety; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
- Proficiency with IH fieldwork, including developing and executing sampling plans for recognized hazards and/or regulatory requirements.
- Experience developing and/or updating compliance programs as required by applicable regulation as well as operating existing written programs.
- Ability to develop and deliver training meets both regulatory requirements and the needs of the audience.
- Knowledge sufficient to serve as a subject matter expert in occupational safety matters, including but not limited to fall protection, lock out tag out, confined space, hazard communication, respiratory protection, among others.
- Experience with noise, indoor air quality, respirable crystalline silica, lead, asbestos, heat stress, air contaminants.
- Ability to understand, interpret, research, and explain regulations, industry standards, and analytical methods and reports
- Must possess at least a U.S. bachelor’s degree or equivalent from a college/university that is accredited by an organization recognized by the U.S. Department of Education (USDE), Association of Universities and Colleges of Canada (AUCC) or a nationally or regionally authorized agency.
Desired Qualifications
Applicants should have a B.S. in Environmental Health and Safety, Industrial Hygiene, or a science-related discipline and 7+ years of experience in industrial hygiene and safety management. Successful candidates will have:
- B.S. in Environmental Health and Safety, Industrial Hygiene, or a science-related discipline
- Minimum of 7 years in a closely related field is preferred.
- Excellent communication skills, in person and in writing, with a diverse range of people, including stakeholders, management, employees, unions, students, and the public.
- Certifications such as Certified Industrial Hygienist (CIH), Certified Safety Professional (CSP), or Certified Hazardous Materials Manager (CHMM) preferred, but not required.

Summary of Physical Demands
Mobility: Ability to climb ladders to access spaces such as rooftops and tunnel systems, ability to see in dim lighting (flashlight only) conditions, ability to walk on uneven terrain. Carrying, pushing/pulling, and climbing for less than one hour per day (lifting equipment or ladders, carrying equipment and ladders, pulling cart with equipment, climbing stairs carrying equipment for inspections or sampling).
Lifting: Ability to carry equipment (approximately 25-50 pounds).
Summary of Health Risks
Working Conditions: This position assesses hazards found in the workplace and as such, exposure to those hazards with proper safeguards may be possible. Examples include exposure to human blood, serum, tissue, and other bodily fluids; and materials covered under the Universal Precautions. Wear a respirator. Work in a noisy environment (above 85 decibels).
