The Department of Fisheries and Wildlife is seeking a new member of the laboratory team for The Water Quality, Environmental, and Molecular Microbiology Laboratory (WQEMM) at Michigan State University.
Duties will include, but are not limited to: field collection of water samples; PEG wastewater preparation, processing and testing of collected samples by PCR; data management and reporting of results.
20% Field collection of environmental samples.
35% Preparation, processing and testing of collected environmental samples.
15% laboratory material sterilization and clean up
25% Testing techniques used include, but are not limited to: filtering Polymerase Chain Reaction (PCR), Droplet Digital PCR (ddPCR), Quantitative PCR (qPCR), Microbial Source Tracking (MST).
5% Communicate and collaborate with labs to complete projects.
Knowledge normally acquired by completing a four- year college degree program in microbiology or biology specific field of research employment or other related field; up to six months of related and progressively more responsible or expansive work experience in basic research techniques in a water microbiology laboratory; experience with techniques specific to the area of research employment such as: Analytical Research, Molecular Biology- quantitative PCR/digital PCR, Agriculture, Social Science, Physiology, Medical Research, etc., including the use and calibration of related equipment; word processing, spreadsheet; database and/or desktop publishing software; presentation software; or an equivalent combination of education and experience. The job may require the appropriate pesticide applicator's registration/certification and/or experience working with potentially dangerous research animals.
3 months to 1 year of lab experience including experience with the following techniques: water filtration, PEG, Polymerase Chain Reaction (PCR), Droplet Digital PCR (ddPCR), Quantitative PCR (qPCR), strong organizational skills to be able to manage, coordinate, prioritize multiple tasks and projects; ability to work independently and as a part of a team.
Preference will be given to candidates with a Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in microbiology, or in a water quality related field.

The job requires moderate physical effort, lifting 40 lbs. and involves standing and manual dexterity for laboratory work 26-75% of the time.
Working conditions involving working with potentially hazardous minor inhalation irritants and dry ice.
