Position Summary

The Research Associate will contribute towards the Isotope Harvesting project at FRIB, focused on the collection and purification of exotic radionuclides generated by FRIB beam-dump, collect and analyze data, review relevant literature, and disseminate the results in research papers and conferences.

Major Duties/Responsibilities

  • Develop and optimize radiochemical separation techniques for separating and purifying specific radionuclides from gaseous, aqueous, and solid phases using various methods, including but not limited to cryogenic trapping, liquid-liquid extraction, precipitation, membrane separation, electrochemical separation, extraction chromatography, ion exchange chromatography. 
  • Radiochemical sample preparation and analysis using radioanalytical instruments (alpha/ gamma spectroscopy, liquid scintillation counting, radio-TLC, autoradiograph, radio- HPLC) and/ or general analytical instruments (UV-Vis spectrophotometer, ICP-OES, ICP-MS). 
  • Disseminate results in research papers, attending workshops/ conferences, and pursuing professional development opportunities. 
  • Analyze experimental data, interpret results, and draw conclusions from radiochemical experiments.
  • Collaborate with interdisciplinary teams to integrate radiochemistry techniques into broader research projects. 
  • Train, support, and help graduate students in their research projects. 
  • Read scientific journals and publications related to radiochemistry and stay current with the latest research and breakthroughs in the field. 
  • Maintain and calibrate laboratory equipment and ensure compliance with safety protocols and regulations.
  • Perform other duties as required or assigned which are reasonably within the scope of the duties in this job classification

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Thorough knowledge of nuclear and radiochemistry.
  • Ability to carry out independent and original research in radiochemical separations (liquid-liquid extraction, precipitation, membrane separation, electrochemical separation, extraction chromatography, ion exchange chromatography). 
  • Skillful ability to handle open radioactive sources (alpha, beta, gamma emitters).
  • Skillful ability to calibrate and operate analytical techniques such as ICP-OES/ MS, UV-Vis spectrophotometer, gamma spectroscopy, alpha spectroscopy, and liquid scintillation counting.
  • Skillful ability to analyze data using software or tools such as Excel, statistical software, or chromatography data systems.
  • Ability to transcribe scientific writing to publish research findings in peer-reviewed journals, ensuring clear, concise, and well-structured articles
  • Excellent attention to detail, organizational skills, and the ability to manage multiple tasks simultaneously.
  • Ability to document, optimize, and standardize SOPs.
  • Thorough understanding of and ability to interpret and operate within the radiation, chemical and general safety framework and adherence to relevant regulations.
  • Ability to present research work effectively at national and international conferences
  • Excellent communication skills to communicate effectively and credibly, both verbally and in writing with all audiences.
  • Excellent problem-solving skills and the ability to work independently and collaboratively within the project teams.
  • Continuous learning mindset to stay updated with the latest advancements in radiochemistry techniques and technologies.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suites.

Required Degree

Doctorate -Radiochemistry or Nuclear Chemistry or closely related field such as inorganic chemistry, analytical chemistry, hydrometallurgy, separation chemistry, nuclear physics, or chemical engineering

Minimum Requirements

  • PhD in Radiochemistry or Nuclear Chemistry or closely related field such as inorganic chemistry, analytical chemistry, hydrometallurgy, separation chemistry, nuclear physics, or chemical engineering.

Desired Qualifications

  • Demonstrated experience with the production and purification of radionuclides.
  • Demonstrated experience working in a radiochemistry laboratory and/or production site where Quality Assurance and Quality Control are applied.
  • Demonstrated experience with automated fluidic systems, operating hot cells, and remote handling.
