Position Summary

The Michigan State University Weed Science Program in the Department of Horticulture is seeking a Field Research Technician to support applied weed management research and Extension activities under the direction of Dr. Joshua Miranda.

The program conducts research on weed management in vegetable, fruit, and other specialty crop production systems throughout Michigan. Research areas include herbicide evaluation, integrated weed management, precision weed management, electrical and other directed-energy technologies, mechanical weed control, cover crops, reduced-tillage systems, and other emerging weed management technologies.

The successful candidate will work as part of a team that includes graduate students, undergraduate research assistants, faculty, Extension educators, farm staff, growers, and industry collaborators. The position will involve substantial field research during the growing season, along with data management, equipment maintenance, research planning, analysis, report preparation, and Extension activities throughout the year.

This is an on-site position and is not eligible for remote work. Work will primarily take place at Michigan State University research farms, laboratories, and field research locations throughout Michigan.

Major Responsibilities

  • Coordinate and conduct field research trials, including field preparation, planting, treatment applications, crop and weed management, data collection, and harvest.
  • Operate, calibrate, maintain, and troubleshoot tractors, sprayers, trailers, implements, and specialized weed control equipment.
  • Supervise and train undergraduate students, interns, and other research personnel, and assist graduate students with research activities.
  • Collect, organize, and maintain research data and accurate records of field activities and experimental results.
  • Manage research equipment, supplies, inventories, purchasing, and field logistics.
  • Participate in field days, research tours, grower meetings, workshops, and other Extension activities.
  • Travel to research locations throughout Michigan as needed.

Minimum Requirements

Knowledge equivalent to that which normally would be acquired by completing a four-year college degree program in Weed Science, Agronomy, Horticulture, Plant Science, Crop Science or other related science fields; one to three years of related and progressively more responsible or expansive work experience in standard laboratory procedures and safety requirements and performing analytical and research techniques in an area related to research being performed; Will require Microsoft product software specific to the area of research; or an equivalent combination of education and experience. The position will require special licensing or certification in Michigan Commercial Pesticide Applicator License or ability to obtain one after hire in the field related to the area of employment.

  • Strong organizational, communication, and teamwork skills.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Word, Excel, and PowerPoint.
  • Ability to work independently and manage multiple projects.
  • Experience with weed science, herbicide research, or specialty crop production.
  • Working knowledge of experimental design, data management, and statistical analysis.
  • Michigan Commercial Pesticide Applicator license or ability to obtain one after hire.
