Position Summary(Basic Job Function)

This is a temporary or an on-call position. Provides professional support. Responsibilities may include general business, science, medical, agricultural or other professional support functions. Term: Temps can work two (2) nine (9) month terms with a week break in service in between and at the end of the second term terminate for three (3) months or switch to an on-call. On-Call allowed to work 1039 hours in any twelve (12) month period.

Unit Position Summary

MSU CVM, Department of LCS seeks Temporary Professional Aide. The successful candidate will work with a faculty researcher and undergraduate students at the MSU Swine Teaching and Research Center to conduct on-farm sow and piglet research which includes animal handling, sample processing, storage and analysis, data collection, organizing and storing, and communication with research collaborators.

70%: Support for on-farm research includes animal handling, sample processing, storage and analysis, data collection, organizing and storing, and communication with research collaborators.

20%: Support to laboratory-based research activities, including assisting in the design, SOP, execution, and troubleshooting of experiments and protocols; keeping of detailed and accurate laboratory records, including protocols and databases; assisting with data entry and preliminary analysis of results.

10%: Laboratory Management duties, including ordering supplies and supervision of student schedules.

Bachelor of Science or enrolled in Veterinary Science Degree or Veterinary Nursing Degree.

Piglets must be identified and sampled at the time of birth. As piglets are born during non-standard work hours, this position will include non-standard working hours in the first week of each replicate. The position will be valid for up to 9 months under the terms of this category.

Desired Qualifications

xperience and understanding of basic concepts of animal physiology; experience handling live animals, preferably swine; experience performing basic wet-chemistry techniques in the lab; experience organizing and analyzing data; knowledge of basic personal computer terminology and operations. Strong interpersonal and communication skills. Attention to detail is critical, as is a sense of humor, the ability to work on multiple projects simultaneously, adhere to deadlines, maintain high ethical research standards, accept constructive criticism, and succeed in a team-oriented environment. Must be eager and willing to learn, ask questions, and make suggestions for how to improve the lab.
