Position Summary(Basic Job Function)

This is a temporary or an on-call position. Provides professional support. Responsibilities may include general business, science, medical, agricultural or other professional support functions. Term: Temps can work two (2) nine (9) month terms with a week break in service in between and at the end of the second term terminate for three (3) months or switch to an on-call. On-Call allowed to work 1039 hours in any twelve (12) month period.

Unit Position Summary

We are seeking a creative and collaborative individual to serve as the Jewish Studies Marketing Specialist. In this role, you will support the Serling Institute's mission by creating, managing, and promoting a variety of marketing materials across digital and print platforms to engage students, alumni, faculty, and the wider Jewish Studies community. 

Position Details: 

  • 50% FTE (approx. 19 hours/week, 11 months/year) 

  • Flexible schedule with unit approval 

  • Hourly rate: $25 per hour 

  • Reports to: Director of Marketing & Communications, with guidance from the Director of the Serling Institute 

Key Responsibilities: 

  • Newsletter Development: Design and produce 20–30 page bi-annual newsletters (digital and print) distributed to over 1,200 stakeholders. 

  • Event & Promotional Design: Create and update flyers, TV and social media ads for events, scholarships, courses, and study abroad programs (Israel and Poland), including weekly updates and sponsor mentions. 

  • Institutional Branding: Produce and update institute infographics and visual reports on course enrollment and event attendance bi-annually. 

  • Advertising Coordination: Design advertisements for print and digital media outlets (e.g., Detroit Jewish News, City Pulse), and within professional academic organizations. 

  • Digital Content Management: 

  • Manage and update the Jewish Studies website (news, publications, courses, events, newsletters, and educational resources). 

  • Maintain the Serling Institute’s YouTube channel and coordinate with hired recording technicians. This can also be done with some guidance and training from MSU. 

  • Visual & Technical Design: 

  • Develop graphics and layouts using Adobe Creative Suite (InDesign, Photoshop, Premier Pro). 

  • Design materials incorporating Hebrew when appropriate. 

  • Content Strategy: Support recruitment, engagement, and storytelling efforts through thoughtful marketing and visual communication. 

Preferred Qualifications: 

  • Social media marketing and platform management 

  • Experience using Canva  

  • Working knowledge of Hebrew for occasional inclusion in design content 

  • Experience with academic communications 

  • Knowledge of digital accessibility standards 

  • Strong writing and editing skills for digital and print content

Desired Qualifications

Required Qualifications: 

  • Demonstrated experience in: 

  • Graphic design (print and digital) 

  • Proficiency with Adobe Creative Suite (InDesign, Photoshop, Premier Pro) 

  • Newsletter layout and production 

  • Familiarity with Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint) 

  • Strong organizational skills and ability to manage multiple projects independently 

  • Ability to meet deadlines and work in a fast-paced academic environment 

  • Understanding of Jewish Studies and Israel Studies content and sensitivity to cultural nuances
