Position Summary

Michigan State University (MSU) invites applications for up to five Postdoctoral Research Scholar positions associated with the Ultrafast Electron Microscopy Platform for Mesoscale Science and Technology (UEM-MST), a major research infrastructure initiative under the US National Science Foundation (NSF) Mid-scale Research Infrastructure program.

The UEM-MST initiative aims to establish a next-generation ultrafast electron microscopy platform that combines femtosecond temporal resolution, nanoscale spatial resolution, high-throughput measurement, and advanced data acquisition to investigate dynamic processes in materials and devices across timescales spanning femtoseconds to seconds.

The project brings together researchers from physics, materials science, chemistry, electrical and computer engineering, accelerator science, and scientific computing, building on MSU's established strengths in ultrafast electron microscopy, laser science, and the Facility for Rare Isotope Beams (FRIB).

Successful candidates will have an opportunity to contribute to the development of a transformative scientific instrument and help shape the research capabilities envisioned for a future national user facility.

Research Opportunities

We seek outstanding, highly motivated researchers across several interconnected areas:

  1. Ultrafast Electron Microscopy and Materials Dynamics
    • Ultrafast electron diffraction, imaging, and spectroscopy
    • Nonequilibrium structural dynamics, quantum materials, and phase transitions
    • Multimodal pump–probe experiments and instrument benchmarking
  2. Ultrafast Lasers, Photonics, and Optical Instrumentation
    • Femtosecond laser systems, pulse shaping, and coherent optical control
    • Ultrafast optical excitation and spectroscopy
    • Laser–electron synchronization and precision timing
  3. RF Systems, Electron Optics, and Accelerator Technologies
    • RF electron-beam manipulation, compression, and synchronization
    • High-brightness electron sources and electron-optical system development
    • Precision RF control, accelerator instrumentation, and beam diagnostics
  4. High-Speed Electronics, FPGA Systems, and Scientific Computing
    • High-speed and multichannel data acquisition
    • FPGA/RFSoC-based controls and precision synchronization
    • Real-time computing, edge AI, and intelligent instrumentation
  5. Computational Imaging, Data Science, and Autonomous Experimentation
    • Computational microscopy and inverse methods
    • Machine learning for ultrafast imaging and spectroscopy
    • Multiscale modeling, digital twins, and AI-assisted experimental control

These areas are intentionally interconnected. Candidates with expertise in one discipline and an interest in collaborating across others are especially encouraged to apply. We welcome researchers who combine experimental, computational, and engineering approaches.

Why Join UEM-MST at MSU?

This opportunity offers more than a conventional postdoctoral appointment. Selected scholars will be positioned to:

  • Help develop a new generation of scientific instruments, contributing to technology that could ultimately serve a national research community.
  • Work across disciplinary boundaries, collaborating with experts in ultrafast science, microscopy, accelerator technology, photonics, electronics, and computational methods.
  • Build on an established research foundation, including MSU's existing ultrafast electron microscopy capabilities and FRIB's expertise in accelerator and RF technologies.
  • Take intellectual ownership of major research and technology-development challenges, with opportunities for high-impact publications, intellectual property development, and scientific leadership.
  • Develop career-relevant expertise applicable to national laboratories, academia, semiconductor instrumentation, advanced microscopy, and high-technology industries.
  • Contribute to the longer-term vision of an advanced ultrafast electron microscopy user facility, subject to future funding and implementation decisions.
