Position Summary

Providing direct nursing care, counseling and instruction to patients, ensuring excellent patient care, providing essential support, and consistently demonstrating MSU core values.

Position Duties:

  • Provides direct nursing care to patients, performs examinations, and assists health care providers with medical procedures.
  • Assists in coordinating total patient care which includes but is not limited to telephone triage according to established practice guidelines, patient education, medication refills and administering injections as necessary.
  • Administers medications and performs patient procedures.
  • Serves as an advocate and provides instruction and counseling to patients and their families.
  • Assists in planning, maintaining, evaluating, and interpreting policies, procedures, and nursing care standards for the clinic while assuring compliance to clinic quality standards.
  • Documents nursing actions in patients' records using the electronic medical record system to provide accurate medical records for future reference and accountability.
  • Participates in interdisciplinary planning for meeting patient care and health service objectives.
  • Assists in developing protocols for carrying out health care providers orders. 
  • Reviews laboratory results and initiates appropriate actions and communicate results with patients, physicians and others as appropriate.
  • Orders supplies and equipment in order to maintain appropriate inventory levels.
  • Performs necessary related activities in order to maintain clinic operations.
  • Assists in setting and evaluating nursing care standards.
  • Attends conferences, staff development programs and workshops.
  • Coordinates services for patients utilizing other human service related agencies and resources; follows up on health care of patients.
  • Participates in interdisciplinary planning for meeting patient care and health service objectives.

Minimum Requirements

Knowledge equivalent to that which normally would be acquired by completing a four-year college degree program in Nursing; one to three years of related and progressively more responsible or expansive work expe rience in Nursing; or an equivalent combination of education and experience. The position also requires possession of a current license to practice as a Registered Nurse in the State of Michigan. Requires a bachelor's degree in nursing and/or work experience in a particular area of nursing or health care.

Experience working in an outpatient healthcare setting.

Summary of Physical Demands

The job requires significant physical effort and involves lifting and maneuvering patients, extensive walking and standing and fine manual dexterity 26-75% of the time; visual and aural acuity necessary to monitor patient care.

Summary of Health Risks

Exposure to human blood, serum, and other body fluids; and materials covered under Universal Precautions; TB risk or work within three (3) feet of patients in a health care setting; wear a respirator.
