Position Summary

The Visitor Experience Coordinator at the Eli and Edythe Broad Art Museum at Michigan State University is responsible for overseeing all aspects of the visitor journey to ensure a welcoming, engaging, and memorable experience. Reporting to the Museum Operations Manager, this role manages student staffing, visitor engagement and front-line communications. The Visitor Experience Coordinator is the primary champion of visitors across museum planning and initiatives serving as a key point of contact for both the public and internal departments. Inherent responsibilities include supervising and training staff, responding to visitor feedback, coordinating with exhibitions and education teams to support programming, and analyzing visitor behavior to drive improvements. The ideal candidate is passionate about cultural engagement, skilled in customer service, and experienced in team leadership within a public-facing environment.

Characteristic Duties and Responsibilities

  • Support the Museum’s mission, vision, and values through commitment to exemplary visitor experience, fostering a welcoming and inclusive environment for all museum constituents.
  • Participate in a team culture of ongoing learning, collaboration, innovation, creativity, and community engagement.
  • Maintain working knowledge of museum initiatives, content, and programming.
  • Serve as an advocate for the Museum and University at onsite and offsite events.
  • Maintain health and safety standards in order to ensure compliance with University, State and Federal rules and regulations.

 Visitor Experience Management 

  • Coordinate daily gallery operations through gallery guide staffing, communications and process development.
  • Coordinate daily museum presentation including signage, print materials, visitor resources and staff upkeep.
  • Maintain front-line communications processes to ensure consistent in person, phone and email visitor experiences in collaboration with the Communications Department.
  • Maintain processes and inter-departmental communication to facilitate consistent visitor experience across Manager on Duty staffing model.
  • Participate in the cross departmental exhibition planning process representing the operations department, visitor needs and feedback, operational feasibility, gallery maintenance and accessibility. Provide regular updates across operations department on exhibition planning.
  • Collaborate with Education Department on development of visitor interactive stations with specific attention to presentation, maintenance and visitor engagement.
  • Serve as Manager on Duty for assigned operating hours including public hours, events and non-public days.

 Experiential Learning 

  • Oversee museum wide student employee experiential learning program in support of museum strategic plan and in alignment with university student employment guidelines.
  • Lead cross-departmental student employee manager workgroup.
  • Execute student employee HR processes with support from Associate Director of Museum Administration.
  • Maintain, communicate and implement student employee onboarding materials and processes.
  • Create and implement annual student employee training and recognition programs
  • Communicate museum updates and cross-departmental staffing needs to student employees.
  • Maintain student employee and alumni records in compliance with university guidelines.
  • Directly manage gallery guide staffing including budgeting, planning, recruitment, hiring, scheduling and ongoing management.

 

Minimum Requirements

Knowledge equivalent to that which normally would be acquired by completing a four-year college degree in Arts Administration, Museum Studies, Hospitality Management, or a related field; three to five years of progressively more responsible and expansive work experience; or an equivalent combination of education and experience. 

Desired Qualifications

 Five or more years of related and progressively more responsible or expansive work experience in museum operations, experience hiring, training and managing student employees; front line visitor services in arts organization, and experience with exhibition teams; or an equivalent combination of education and experience. Ability to work a flexible schedule including evening, weekend and holiday shifts. 

  • Ability to successfully interface with diverse audiences served by Museum 
  • Experience working in a museum  
  • Experience supervising and training large numbers of student employees. 
  • Understanding of visitor experience and technical aspects of exhibition operations. 
  • Excellent organizational skills with the ability to effectively work on multiple projects simultaneously.  
  • Interest in broadening their knowledge in a creative cultural and teaching institution.

Work Hours

40 hours per week during museum operating and special event hours, including regular evenings, weekends, and holidays to support public programs and visitor engagement. This position is not a standard Monday–Friday daytime schedule.

Summary of Physical Demands

Regular lifting, carrying, pushing/pulling up to 50lbs. Set up and tear down for events is regularly required. This involves setting up tables, stacking chairs, pushing carts of tables and chairs, bending and lifting/installation of A/V equipment.
