Salary:  $35.64 - $41.06 upon meeting progression step requirements. Michigan State University Infrastructure Planning and Facilities invites applications for the position of HVAC/Boiler Mechanic and we need your help.  The department is responsible for all aspects of maintaining, troubleshooting, repairing, and installation of heating, ventilating, and air conditioning units and combination heating, ventilating, and air conditioning systems.  

This position will analyze and perform preventive maintenance to repair boiler/heating systems and steam distribution systems, related controls, pumps, fans, compressors, heat exchangers, filters, softeners, incinerators, small boilers and furnaces, piping fixtures, etc. Operate heating systems, incinerators, small boilers and furnaces. Lubricate, repair and service the above equipment. Change filters, belts, seals, bearings, etc. Cover boilers, pipes, auxiliaries and accessories with insulation materials. Cut, thread, and bend pipe using a hacksaw, pipe cutters, cutting torch, threading machine, and pipe bending machine. Assemble, install, and test a variety of metal and non-metal pipe and fittings, including brass, copper, steel, and plastic. Operate combustion analyzing equipment to evaluate burner performance. Tune power burners to achieve highest possible efficiencies. Install, alter and adjust (burner) electronic components. Formulate boiler operation control strategies to be used in BAS systems. Troubleshoot control systems throughout the heating plant. 

This position may carry an on-call cell phone on a weekly rotating basis.   This posting will fill 2 vacancies.  

Job responsibilities are as follows: 
30% - Work directly with the customer responding to projects, building trouble calls, retro-commissioning service calls, conduct building checks, and perform repairs. Interpret blueprints, diagrams, sketches, and job specifications; estimate time and material to be used on the job; stock, maintain, completes necessary paperwork to requisition material and parts.
20% - Perform preventative maintenance and repair boiler/heating systems and steam distribution systems. Operate heating systems, incinerators, large and small boilers and furnaces. Perform CSD-1 inspections on required heating equipment.
20% - Perform preventative maintenance on commercial HVAC systems. Troubleshoot, repair, and install commercial HVAC systems and controls, consisting of pneumatic, electric, and electronic components. Perform system inspections.
10% - Perform preventative maintenance on residential/light commercial HVAC systems. Troubleshoot, repair, and install residential/light commercial HVAC/BOILER systems and controls. Perform system inspections.
10% - Respond to general odor calls. Respond to and work with local utility on natural gas calls. Respond to and work with Environmental Health and Safety for chemical odor calls.
10% - Time tracking, job cost, record keeping, customer contact, material procurement. Correspondence through email, training, meetings, and professional development.

Minimum Requirements

  • Completion of high school education or an equivalent combination of technical training and experience.
  • Successful completion of an applicable trade-specific Trades Helper program, or completion of an approved apprenticeship program, or an associate degree, or equivalent education/experience.
  • Five years’ experience in the trade that includes five years of experience in commercial heating, ventilation, and air conditioning (HVAC) installation including two years of experience in commercial heating systems installation, maintenance and troubleshooting and demonstrated ability to independently perform the duties and responsibilities of the classification, or equivalent experience.
  • Possession of the State of Michigan Mechanical Contractor’s License - #2 (HVAC and Gas Piping) or successful completion of Trades Competency Test prior to completion of applicable trial or probation period.
  • Must have possession of a State of Michigan Mechanical Contractor’s License - #6 (Unlimited Heating Service) or successful completion of Trades Competency Test to receive progression step increases at and after the 12-month mark.
  • Possession of State of Michigan Mechanical Contractor’s License -#2(HVAC and Gas Piping) and #6(Unlimited Heating Service) and successful completion of Trades Competency Test to receive progression step increases at and after the 18-month mark.
  • Expert knowledge of the operation of high-pressure (>15 psi) boilers.
  • Expert knowledge of the hydronic heating and cooling and process piping systems.
  • Expert knowledge of the methods, materials, tools, equipment, occupational hazards, and safety precautions of the trade.
  • Expert knowledge of applicable building codes, rules, and regulations (local, state, and federal).
    Possession of a valid vehicle operator's license.
  • Must furnish own hand tools.
  • Frequent lifting of 26 to 75 pounds and occasional lifting of over 75 pounds.

Desired Qualifications

Five or more years of experience in the operation and maintenance of central commercial-industrial HVAC systems, including troubleshooting, diagnosing, and repair of direct digital control systems associated with that equipment; familiarity with individualized package control systems; possession of a State of Michigan mechanical contractor’s license with unlimited heating, knowledge of and experience with the following systems: Phoenix Lab Pressurization Control, Siemens Building Management System, and Delta Building Management System; knowledge of and experience in the operation and troubleshooting of room level pressurization controls, laboratory ventilation controls;  knowledge of and experience with Hydronic heating systems; comprehensive understanding of HVAC systems and component interactions; demonstrated experience with instruments used for testing, adjusting and balancing (TAB); excellent customer relations skills; and proficient in the use of a laptop computer.
