Position Summary
Process and test specimens from animals and the environment for identification of parasites and bacteria; performance of laboratory assays (traditional, serologic, and molecular) for diagnostic purposes; organize and analyze data, enter and retrieve information from the Laboratory Information Management System; perform quality control procedures and maintain quality control records; store and dispose of specimens; operate and maintain scientific equipment; communicate with lab staff, veterinarians and clients to provide information and lab results; work with other lab personnel in an environment of problem-solving and process improvement. The position has responsibility for the safety and health of others and, therefore, involves strict attention to detail and protocol. Some specimen processing will be required to take place in Biosafety Level 3.
Minimum Requirements
Knowledge equivalent to that which normally would be acquired by completing a four-year college degree in veterinary technology, microbiology, molecular diagnostics, medical technology or a related science field; one to three years of related and progressively more expansive work experience in a high-volume diagnostic laboratory or equivalent combination of education and experience.
Desired Qualifications
Experience with safe handling of biological specimens; antibody and parasite detection methods; experience in laboratory safety; experience in the use of laboratory systems and computer software; strong communication and customer service skills; ability to work collaboratively demanding environment; multi-tasking and meeting deadlines while maintaining a high quality of work. Molecular diagnostic testing experience in nucleic acid extraction and PCR-based procedures; ability to multi-task and meet deadlines while maintaining a high quality of work; ability to work independently as well as collaboratively and demonstrate a high level of initiative; excellent time-management skills; experience in the use of laboratory information systems and the file management and manipulation of Excel and Word; excellent verbal and written communication skills, as well as strong problem solving and customer service skills, and the ability to maintain a professional demeanor at all times.

Work Hours
