Laboratory Preparation Technologist

Position Summary

The Organic Chemistry Laboratory Prep Technician provides technical and operational support for the Department of Chemistry’s organic chemistry teaching laboratories by preparing and testing reagents, maintaining laboratory equipment and spaces, managing chemicals and supplies, and supporting the safe and effective delivery of laboratory instruction. The position works closely with laboratory coordinators, teaching assistants, students, faculty, staff, Environmental Health and Safety, and vendors to ensure teaching laboratories are properly prepared, supplied, maintained, and operated in accordance with departmental and university safety requirements.

Minimum Requirements

Knowledge equivalent to that which normally would be acquired by completing a four-year college degree program in Medical Technology or Microbiology; up to six months of related and progressively more responsible or expansive work experience in microbiology, chemistry and aseptic techniques; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

Desired Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree in chemistry or a closely related field.
• Previous experience working in an academic chemistry laboratory or teaching laboratory environment.
• Experience with organic chemistry laboratory preparation, including reagent preparation and testing.
• Experience maintaining, troubleshooting, and calibrating laboratory equipment.
• Experience managing chemical inventories, laboratory supplies, and hazardous waste.
• Strong organizational skills and ability to coordinate multiple priorities in a time- sensitive laboratory environment.
• Demonstrated ability to work effectively with faculty, staff, teaching assistants, and students.
• Experience using Microsoft Access, Excel, and Word to support laboratory operations.
• Familiarity with university laboratory safety practices and chemical hygiene requirements.
• CPR/AED certification and experience responding to laboratory emergencies.
