Working/Functional Title

International Employee Advisor

Position Summary

The OISS International Employee Advisor advises non-immigrant employees and university departments on immigration regulations and processes; files non-immigrant peitiions on behalf of the university; maintains employment-based immigration files for university compliance with immigration regulations; and stays abreast of current issues related to employment-based immigration. Additionally, this position provides support services and guidance for international students and scholars visiting MSU.

Hybrid work statement: OISS is currently operating under a hybrid modality structure, with staff working three days in person and two days remotely with additional time onsite during peak periods. This structure is subject to change at any time.

Essential Duties & Responsibilities:

Advising international employees and departments (90%)

  • Assist with reviewing, preparing and interpreting immigration documents, letters, and regulations for the hiring of international faculty and staff. Prepare for filing H-1B, E-3 and TN employment-based visa categories (prepares prevailing wages, LCAs, I-129s), assists with PR processing
  • Assist with maintaining employment-based immigration files for the university including audit files
  • Run reports on employment immigration status to alert departments of expiration dates
  • Assist with instructing and advising academic departments on appropriate visas, forms, and procedures in order to hire temporary or permanent foreign faculty, researchers and students
  • Interpret federal regulations, updates materials and procedure manuals and answers questions from staff and public in order to provide information on policies and procedures

Administrative responsibilities (10%)

  • Support the international student and scholar advising teams by sharing immigration updates and assisting with cases
  • Facilitate programming for international employees
  • Other duties as assigned

Minimum Requirements

Knowledge normally acquired by completing one or two years of post-bachelor degree coursework in higher education administration or advising, legal studies, international studies or related field; one to three years of related and progressively more responsible or expansive work experience in international student, scholar or employee advising; experience with reading, interpreting and applying immigration regulations; demonstrated experience as part of a team and service-oriented work environment

Desired Qualifications

A graduate or professional degree in higher education administration or advising, legal studies, and/or international studies or related field; extensive experience advising international students and scholars in F and J status; knowledge of H1B regulations and previous experience filing H1B petitions; experience working in a globally diverse workplace.
