Position Summary

This is a comprehensive multispecies program designed to provide a strong foundation in Comparative Theriogenology. The intern will gain hands-on experience with both small and large domestic species, with focus on canine and equine reproduction. Opportunities are also planned for exposure to reproductive cases involving other domestic animals, such as cattle and small ruminants, as well as zoo animal species. In addition, the intern will have the opportunity to work with wild and zoo animal reproductive specimens through elective rotations. The program also includes exposure to fields complementary to Theriogenology such as small animal emergency and critical care, as well as large animal internal medicine and neonatology. Depending on the intern’s specific interests, availability, and licensing, there may be opportunities to engage with equine and production animal breeding programs at MSU South Campus Animal Farms.

The intern will work closely with two Theriogenologists, Drs. Viviane Gomes and Julie Strachota, and a Reproductive Pathologist, Dr. Dalen Agnew. Clinical experience will be gained through supervised case management and participation in educational activities, including pre-clinical and clinical teaching of veterinary nursing and DVM students, intern/resident seminars, and rounds. Opportunities for participation in reproductive-focused research may also be available. The MSU Theriogenology Internship Program will provide a diverse educational experience that will prepare the intern for specialty private practice, advanced graduate studies, or clinical residency training leading to board certification in Theriogenology.

Duties will include:

• Primary patient responsibility and service duty on Small Animal, Equine, and Food Animal Theriogenology.
• Working directly with faculty, residents, nurses, veterinary students, and veterinary nursing students in the service areas assigned.

• Completing laboratory training to develop various sample processing skills pertaining to Theriogenology.
• Full participation in instructional opportunities and responsibilities such as pre-clinical and clinical teaching, seminars, and rounds.

Doctorate -Veterinary

Minimum Requirements

Prerequisites other than being a Graduate of a College of Veterinary Medicine

• DVM or equivalent.
• Passed NAVLE examination (by time of start date).
• Licensure to practice in the state of Michigan, including a Veterinary License or Clinical Academic Limited license, as well as a Controlled Substance license.
