Position Summary

Instructional responsibilities include teaching HRT 211 – Landscape Plants I (3 credits) for the Institute of Agricultural Technology during the fall semesters (August 16 – December 31).  The course will be delivered in Muskegon, Michigan at Muskegon Community College.  HRT 211 contact hours will be 2 hours of lecture, recitation, or discussion per week and 2 hours of lab per week (4 hours of total contact time per week) for 15 weeks of instruction. 

Course Description:  

Identification, adaptation, and evaluation of shade trees, narrow-leaved evergreens, shrubs, woody vines, herbs, ornamental grasses, and herbaceous perennials.

Course Objectives: 

1) To learn how to identify plant species common to the Great Lakes area horticulture trade.  This includes knowing the scientific name(s), selected cultivars, common name(s), and the plant family.  Identification involves seeing parts of the plant or the whole plant.  HRT 211 is organized by plant families and covers many types of deciduous trees, shrubs, vines, perennials, and bulbs.  (Annuals and evergreens have been moved to HRT 211 and this change is in process over the next few years. 

2) To develop an appreciation for the great diversity and beauty of ornamental landscape plants. 

3) To be able to select plants for specific purposes and site conditions.  This includes knowing the environmental requirements of specific plants, their desirable and undesirable characteristics, and their landscape.  

4) To be familiar with selected reference books, source guides, and other resources. 

Position is planned to recur every Fall Semester

Required Degree

Masters -Horticulture or related fields

Minimum Requirements

Required: Master's Degree in Horticulture or related fields.

Experience in development and assessment of learning outcomes. 

Undergraduate teaching experience and a passion for teaching.
