Working/Functional Title

Director Clinical Experiences

Position Summary

The Michigan State University College of Human Medicine’s Office of Academic Affairs invites applications for the position of Director of Clinical Experiences. In 2016, the College of Human Medicine (CHM) implemented an innovative new curriculum, envisioned to be responsive to the needs of students and faculty in a new technological era and a new medical landscape. This new curriculum, the Shared Discovery Curriculum, provides integrated content organized around patient complaints and concerns. It is an experience-based curriculum where medical students learn by doing.

The college has created clinical experiences starting soon after students matriculate. During the first year, students are placed in primary care settings throughout Lansing and Grand Rapids communities. This is known as the Early Clinical Experience (ECE). Second year students rotate through several different types of clinical settings including respiratory therapy, hospice and palliative care, pediatric wards, adult wards, and emergency medicine as the Middle Clinical Experience (MCE). The Late Clinical Experiences (LCE) include clerkships in the primary specialties and elective rotations and occur in the community campuses across Michigan (Upper Peninsula, Detroit, Traverse City, Grand Rapids, Lansing, Flint, Midland, and Southeast Michigan). In addition to the clinical experiences, students engage in intensive study of basic sciences, epidemiology, health policy and other social sciences during the intersessions which are part of the spring semesters of both the Early and Middle Clinical Experiences. The Late Clinical Experience includes the Advanced Skills and Knowledge courses which span the entire last two years.

Reporting to the Assistant Dean for Clinical Experiences, the Director is responsible for the implementation and management of the programs and policies of the CHM Clinical Experiences, including:

  • Oversee the coalition of course directors and ensure alignment across courses
  • Respond to concerns of students about course expectations or questions, concerns about course sites, engaging with Clinical Experiences directors and personnel as needed
  • Create educational and policy documents for students, faculty, and staff, and participate in orientation activities
  • Provide primary support to the ECE and Intersession teams, collaborate with the Assistant Dean of Clinical Experiences to provide curricular alignment across all curricular components
  • Collaborate with student affairs on pre-matriculation programming for incoming medical students, and lead the design of the academic portions of that programming.
  • Oversee the teaching assignment request and monitoring process within Clinical Experiences.  Oversee processes for utilization of assigned faculty teaching and provide expertise and support to clinical experiences faculty and staff on this process
  • Participate in academic review meetings for M1 and M2 students as the academic administration representative
  • Design and deploy curricular improvements and changes, as assigned by the Ast Dean for Clinical Experiences.  Lead development and management of these changes in programming to support student academic experience and progress (eg: robust student orientation to experiential and adult learning concepts, gateway programming for LCE entry)
  • Assistant Course Director of HM 591, including syllabus preparation and course administration.

Academic department and rank will be determined based on qualifications and experience.
