Position Summary

Michigan State University (MSU) seeks a strategic, collaborative, and service-oriented Executive Director of Enterprise Services to provide leadership for a large and complex IT department supporting enterprise application platforms, administrative systems, development, and data services. Reporting to the Chief Information Officer (CIO), this role is responsible for setting the vision, direction, and service models that enable efficient, high-impact technology solutions in support of MSU’s academic, research, and administrative mission.

The Executive Director serves as a principal advisor to university leadership and campus partners, ensuring enterprise technology services are reliable, resilient, user-focused, and aligned with institutional priorities. This role leads multiple enterprise teams, champions employee engagement and inclusion, and drives continuous improvement, operational excellence, and responsible stewardship of university resources.

Key Responsibilities

Strategic Leadership & Vision

  • Provide strategic direction and leadership for enterprise application platforms, administrative systems, development, and data services in alignment with MSU IT and university goals.
  • Serve as a trusted advisor to the CIO, departmental leaders, and university leadership on large-scale enterprise technology initiatives.
  • Lead the evolution of enterprise service models to improve user experience, reliability, and value delivery across the institution.
  • Monitor emerging trends in higher education and enterprise technology to position MSU for future success.

Enterprise Service Delivery

  • Oversee enterprise systems and data services supporting academic, administrative, research, and student communities.
  • Ensure effective planning and execution of projects through collaboration with managers, campus partners, and stakeholders.
  • Drive initiatives that improve operational efficiency, service quality, and customer satisfaction.
  • Establish and monitor key performance indicators (KPIs) and metrics to assess performance and outcomes.

People, Culture & Engagement

  • Recruit, retain, and develop a diverse, inclusive, and high-performing leadership team.
  • Foster a culture of accountability, collaboration, innovation, and continuous learning.
  • Coach and mentor managers and staff, promoting employee engagement and professional growth.
  • Lead with empathy and transparency, supporting a positive and inclusive work environment.

Partnerships, Governance & Stewardship

  • Build and maintain strong relationships with campus partners and stakeholders to guide priorities and manage escalations.
  • Collaborate across MSU IT and university units to define future service needs, support models, and after-hours services.
  • Ensure compliance with university policies, regulatory requirements, and fiscal responsibilities.
  • Provide oversight of enterprise services funding, ensuring projects are delivered on time, within budget, and with intended value.

Required Degree

Bachelors -Computer and information sciences, business management, marketing, or related fields.

Minimum Requirements

  • More than eight years of progressively responsible leadership experience in leading enterprise information technologies.

  • Demonstrated experience leading multiple, large, cross-functional teams or enterprise-scale initiatives.

  • Multi-year experience working with senior leaders and stakeholders in improving enterprise systems, platforms, data services, and user experience.

  • Expert knowledge of current and emerging technologies and their strategic application to organizational needs.

  • Experience building and leading technology teams that deliver reliable, highly available services.

  • This position requires onsite presence a minimum of 4 days per week (1 day remote) on the MSU campus located in East Lansing, Michigan.
