Director of Fraternity and Sorority Life

Position Summary

Oversee the programs and external engagement of the Office of Fraternity and Sorority Life to ensure the development of co-curricular education and training programs, the advancement of student success initiatives, and the creation of an experience that complements and supplements the academic programs of Michigan State University.

CHARACTERISTIC DUTIES – RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Provides strategic leadership for the Office of Fraternity and Sorority Life
  • Provides leadership in the development of co-curricular educational programs that complement and supplement the academic programs of the University.
  • Effectively manages financial, human and physical resources
  • Provides leadership and support for the development of programs that promote understanding and appreciation for students from all backgrounds.
  • Formulates and implements objectives, policies, and procedures for evaluating programs and organizational effectiveness.
  • Works closely with fraternities, sororities, and stakeholders on matters of interest to them and to the University.
  • Recruits, hires, supervises and evaluates the Fraternity and Sorority Life staff.
  • Represents the Division of Student Affairs on various University committees
  • Interacts and works collaboratively with students, fraternities and sororities, and other members of the University community to enhance the overall climate for students.
  • Interacts and works collaboratively with departments within the Division of Student Affairs, and Academic Affairs.
  • Engages in research and program evaluation activities.
  • Carries out other duties as assigned by the Assistant Vice President for Student Affairs
  • Work with various units to develop policies and procedures for fraternities and sororities, and to implement major activities that promote and support the fraternity and sorority community.

COMMUNICATIONS – INTERPERSONAL RELATIONSHIPS

Interacts with:

  • Assistant Vice Presidents for Student Affairs (and their respective units), Vice President for Affairs, fraternity and sorority national and local organization leaders, Vice Provost and Dean of Undergraduate Education (and their respective departments)- to set priorities, problem solve, share reports, data and collect information.
  • Provost Office, academic administrators (including Assistant Deans), and department chairs - to serve on committees, consult on or plan programs and activities.
  • University staff - in order to plan, consult, problem solve and share information.
  • Support staff - to provide direction.
  • Department of Police and Public Safety, MSU Alumni Association, and University Communications - to share information and plan programs.
  • Student groups
  • Public - to provide information

Minimum Requirements

Knowledge equivalent to that which would normally be acquired by completing one or two years of post-bachelors degree work such as a master’s in higher education administration; five to eight years of related and progressively more responsible or expansive work experience in student affairs programs and services, an understanding of the formal and informal organizational structures, academic governance and procedures, and informal organization structures specific to the university, computer technology, training and development programs, designing and developing research projects and in supervising staff and office operations, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
