Chief Business Officer

Position Summary

The Department of Athletics is searching for an Executive Senior Associate Athletics Director, Chief Business Officer. The successful candidate will oversee business operations and manage the financial strategy of the Department of Intercollegiate Athletics including oversight of strategic projects, long-range planning, and analytics. This individual will lead all financial administration, business planning, budgeting, and oversight of the day-to-day operations and staff of the Athletics Business Office and report to the Executive Deputy Athletics Director/Chief Operating Officer. Responsibilities will include, but are not limited to:

  • Implement and oversee departmental budgetary policies and procedures for all sports and all administrative units
  • Develop and manage short and long-term financial strategy, operational and capital budgets, sustainable forecasting processes, and financial performance
  • Identify financial trends and potential business opportunities to provide strategic recommendations to executive leadership to optimize profitability and organizational efficiency, while safeguarding the organization's financial assets
  • Lead efforts to effectively manage cash flow, ensure funding availability, and provide timely and accurate analysis of budgets, and revenue streams to support decision-making across the organization
  • Develop and implement inventory management and life cycle replacement plan for Athletics Department assets
  • Oversee and manage the procurement process and athletic contracting
  • Collaborate extensively with internal and external partners on maximizing the department’s revenue growth opportunities through sponsors, licensing, and other external partners
  • Collaborate extensively with Facilities and Capital Projects staff to develop and implement fiscal plans for facility maintenance, renovations, and new construction to include debt financing as needed
  • Serve as day-to-day point of contact between MSU Athletics and University Finance Office
  • Analyze, negotiate, and make recommendations on the financial aspects of contractual agreements
  • Maintain an understanding of current national issues facing NCAA member institutions to forecast financial strategy to align with the department’s objectives and growth plans
  • Develop and oversee accounting controls to ensure compliance with University policies and procedures, as well as Big Ten Conference, NCAA, and Federal rules and regulations
  • Regular reporting and communication to athletic department units and leadership
  • Other duties as assigned

Bachelors -Accounting, Business, or a related field

Minimum Requirements

  • Bachelor's Degree in Accounting, Business, or a related field
  • Extensive and progressively more responsible and expansive work experience in financial or accounting practices
  • Extensive experience in financial strategy, including forecasting and market analysis
  • The ability to anticipate future consequences and trends accurately, and articulately paint credible pictures and visions of possibilities and likelihoods

Desired Qualifications

  • CPA or Master's Degree
  • 15 years in a finance leadership role with oversight of policy, processes and staff
