Position Summary(Basic Job Function)

This a temporary or on-call position. Provides clerical support. Responsibilities may include secretarial, receptionist, bookkeeping, information processing or related clerical tasks. Temps On-Campus: includes College of Human Medicine, the College of Osteopathic Medicine at Detroit Medical Center, and the College of Osteopathic Medicine at Macomb University CenterTerm. On campus temps can work six (6) months then terminate for three (3) months or switch to an oncall. Off campus temps can continuously work nine(9) month appointment with a one (1) week break in between. On-Call allowed to work up to 40 hours/week for three (3) months then must be moved down to 19 hours/week and cannot work more than 520 hours in any six (6) month period.

Unit Position Summary

The OISS international Student and Scholar Advocate assists the OISS Director in supporting the international students and scholars at Michigan State University.

Responsibilities include:

  • Responding to inquiries from international students and scholars including but not limited to requests for emergency financial assistance, assistance with personal or academic issues, housing questions, and understanding university policies
  • Managing the OISS emergency financial assistance program: review applications with director; interview applicants as needed; make recommendations for funding; work with fiscal officer to track awards
  • Assisting the OISS health team: respond to inquiries about health insurance; assist with training new team members
  • Walk-in assistance/advising at the OISS reception desk
  • Outreach to students who are struggling academically
  • Administrative and programming tasks as assigned by supervisor

OISS is currently operating under a hybrid modality structure, with staff working three days in person and two days remotely.

Desired Qualifications

  • Experience supporting international students; understanding of student immigration regulations; cultural competence
  • Excellent communication and organization skills; critical thinking skills; ability to empathize with international students and scholars
  • Graduate degree in social work or international education
