Civil Engineer

Position Summary

Salary: $77,100 - $94,300 annually depending on experience. MSU Benefits - Free comprehensive health care for you and your family as well as a 10% contribution toward your retirement; Generous sick, vacation, personal and holiday time; Eligible to work a partial remote schedule after a successful probationary period, or at supervisor's discretion. Regular attendance is required to meet business and customer needs. 

This position will provide Civil Engineering support and apply intensive and diversified principles and practices and makes independent decisions that apply to large academic institutions; visual inspection of construction work as necessary, analysis, design, and support of maintenance operations. Develop plans and specifications for new construction, campus utility systems and road infrastructure, building alterations, and improvements to campus facilities. Review internal and outside consultant projects drawings, specifications, and other construction documents to ensure the design intent and campus standards are met, and report findings as required. Develops project/ planning drawings in AutoCAD/CIVIL 3D and ArcGIS as required. Assist staff in clarifying plans and specification content; Issue construction directives when required. Provide technical support and troubleshooting assistance to Maintenance Operations, Mapping Coordinator, Landscape Architect, University Traffic Engineer, and other IPF Departments as required. Duties associated with this position involves working at construction sites, access to work areas by ladder, scaffold, hatchways, ramps, and similar means; outdoor work on a variety of floor and ground surfaces including climbing and entry into confined spaces; visual inspection of construction work as essential elements of construction inspection, analysis, and support of maintenance operations functions. Must be innovative and communicate well in a team environment and with campus stakeholders. May provide backup on-call for emergencies on projects they are assigned outside of normal working hours.

Job responsibilities are as follows:
35%: Develops design solutions of limited complexity develops project/planning drawings in AutoCAD/Civil 3D and ArcGIS and assists with providing technical support for troubleshooting, repairing and maintaining systems of a complex nature. Develop plans and specifications for new construction, Campus Utility Systems, Road Infrastructure, restoration, alterations and improvements to campus facilities and equipment. Reviews projects in the field to determine if the work follows the design intent and reports findings to the project manager as field work progresses.

20%: Completes plan review of outside consultants' work for projects of limited complexity and offers suggestions for improvements and innovation prior to projects going out for competitive bidding. Reviews project for code compliance, interprets appropriate building codes and works with the other team members to ensure the project design meets the applicable standards and codes. 

15%: Maintains and provides discipline specific construction standards and technical assistance by working with maintenance staff and other IPF departments in an advisory role for campus facilities and equipment when requested, provides and leads effort to upload updated standards and guidelines when reviewed by senior staff. Develops project/planning drawings in AutoCAD/Civil 3D and ArcGIS as required.

10%: Assists with planning and designing system modifications and improvements of a complex nature to support the academic mission of the university, and with planning long range activities required to maintain system reliability. 

10%: Provides information to project manager to clarify plans and specifications content. Issues directives in writing (addendum, request for information responses, construction change directives, and design review comments) when required.

10%: Works closely with the mapping coordinator and maintenance operations to ensure Campus Utility Infrastructure Maps and GIS information to develop spatial thematic maps for engineering analysis and to ensure the GIS information is accurate.

Minimum Requirements

Knowledge equivalent to that which normally would be acquired by completing a four-year college degree program in civil engineering; three to five years of related and progressively more responsible or expansive work experience in the civil engineering; including design, methods, materials, maintenance, and operation of appropriate systems; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

This position requires having a valid operator’s license and must meet MSU Safe Driving Standards for operating a university vehicle.

Desired Qualifications

Experience with AutoCAD/Civil3D, and/or REVIT and knowledge of construction practices as well as an understanding of applicable building codes; experience with Microsoft 365 (Word, Excel, Outlook, PowerPoint, Project, etc). Professional Engineering Registration in the State of Michigan or Engineer in Training (EIT); Three+ years of experience in project coordination and developing studies/presentation materials; Experience with developing and interpreting project documents (prints, contracts, etc.) and applicable Municipality, Utility/Road Infrastructure, safety, and building system codes; Experience with engineering modeling software and Storm Water Management Practices; Design Experience with Storm/Sanitary Sewers, Thermal Distribution Systems, Water Distribution Systems, Electrical/Communication Systems, and coordination of other utility systems; Design drawing experience with ArcMAP/ArcPro, GIS Applications, and thematic maps, point clouds, cut and fill, estimating, and/or field surveying.
