Position Summary(Basic Job Function)

This is a temporary or on-call position. Performs a variety of duties in support of summer camps and conferences, such as responding to participant concerns, questions and emergencies; maintaining/monitoring camp rules, checking in/out of participants, attending meetings. May involve overnight supervision of participants. Term: Temps can work two (2) nine (9) month terms with a week break in service in between and at the end of the second term terminate for three (3) months or switch to an on-call. On-Call allowed to work 1039 hours in any twelve (12) month period.

Summer Art Camp: Kid Studio 

This is not your average art camp! Creative campers will spend their week in our one-of-a-kind building working alongside other kids to experiment, wonder, imagine, and create in our Kid Studio. They’ll make and see art all around the museum as they explore the endless possibilities of what art can be. 

Position Description: The Camp Lead Teacher is responsible for creating and managing a safe, welcoming and inclusive art studio environment for summer camp youth ages 6 – 11. This role takes the lead in developing and implementing camp curriculum that connects with contemporary themes in art education. The Lead Teacher will provide instructional leadership for camp counselors and work closely with the team to develop a creative, fun, and comfortable community atmosphere.  

Characteristic Duties and Responsibilities:  Plan and manage daily schedule of activities including choice-based centers and whole group projects, lead large group activities, manage the camp art studio, oversee daily set up and clean up procedures, plan and communicate daily schedule with camp counselors through daily and weekly meetings, enforce equitable camp behavior expectations for all campers.  

Job Duties:   

  • Draft weekly curriculum and daily plans 

  • Develop camp supply list and maintain weekly inventory of supplies and equipment 

  • Collaborate with operations and education staff on weekly schedule  

  • Lead and manage groups of youth during studio, gallery, and social time 

  • Effectively engage with youth and families to foster an inclusive atmosphere.  

  • Maintain appearance, organization, set-up and clean-up  

  • Learn about artworks and identify relevance and meaningful connections for K-12 audiences.  

  • Oversee field trips and walks on campus 

  • Organize installation of end-of-camp exhibitions 

  • Communicate with and respond to feedback from the Broad Education Team on curriculum, schedule, and meeting student behavioral and social/emotional needs 

  • Attend trainings and stay up-to-date for all MSU Youth Programs guidelines and policies as directed by supervisor  

  • Adhere to all University guidelines for Youth Program activities.  

  • Other camp support tasks as assigned by the Operations and Education Team.   

Duration and Compensation:  

$33.00/hr . Payroll aligns with the MSU BiWeekly Payroll Calendar.

Work Hours: Monday – Thursday, 8:00AM - 4:00PM; Friday, 8:00AM – 5:00PM 

 Camp Sessions:

Week 1: July 7 – July 11 

Week 2: July 14 – July 18 

Week 3: July 21 – July 25 

Week 4: July 28 – August 1 

Curriculum Planning Meetings + Training Dates:  

Approximately 40 hours of planning and training during the month of June in advance of camp. Schedule will be determined based on museum and teacher availability. Sample schedule drafted below: 

Week of June 8: Facility tour, staff introductions, and initial planning meeting  

Week of June 15: Draft curriculum plan and material list meeting 

Week of June 23: Final curriculum plan 

Week of June 30: On-site training and set-up (2 consecutive days) 

 

 

 

Desired Qualifications

Experience leading a choice-based studio, or teaching for artistic behavior (TAB) environment. Experience as team leader or manager in an educational setting. Experience teaching in a camp setting.
