Position Summary

Join MSU HR Organization and Professional Development as a key member of the Learning and Development team. In this role, you’ll apply instructional design processes and adult learning best practices to enhance the skills, knowledge, and abilities of MSU employees, contributing to the university's mission and strategic priorities.

MSU HR offers more than 50 professional development programs including Crucial Conversations, DiSC, Clifton Strengths, Leader Development, and more, all designed specifically for employees at MSU. Reporting to the Learning and Development Manager, the Learning and Development Specialist will design, implement, and evaluate employee-facing learning programs and assist in the implementation of the unit’s overall learning strategy to support campus learning needs. You will help Organization and Professional Development reach their strategic priorities by providing insight into adult learning, instructional design, and evaluation best practices.

This is a unionized staff position and has the capability of working a hybrid schedule.  The job requires at least one day of work onsite per week, with some weeks requiring additional days to meet the needs of program scheduling.  The Professional Development Team offers in-person training throughout the year, and the scheduling of courses that this position teaches or supports may require additional onsite work during a given week. All work schedules and schedule changes must be pre-approved by the supervisor.

What You'll Be Doing: 

  • Design and develop strategic learning and development programs which target the institutional skill development and learning needs of greatest priority.  
  • Implement and evaluate virtual and in-person learning programs using instructional design best practices to measure program effectiveness, learning, and impact.  
  • Contribute to the planning and execution of a comprehensive learning strategy, including a focus on best practices of accessibility and the creation of inclusive learning environments.  
  • Foster strategic partnerships with key internal and external stakeholders, third party facilitators and subject matter experts.  
  • Create and maintain digital learning resources for formal and informal learning programs in alignment with MSU accessibility and brand standards. 
  • Apply and administer various educational technologies including e-learning authoring tools, learning management systems, process management, video-based learning, and more. 
  • Evaluate current and emerging learning needs of MSU’s diverse workforce to respond with meaningful and effective learning solutions.

Minimum Requirements

Knowledge equivalent to that which normally would be acquired by completing a four-year college degree program in Education, Instructional Design, Adult Learning or a field related to the area of employment; three to five years of related and progressively more responsible or expansive experience in a setting which corresponds to the department of employment including teaching, learning, instructional design, program evaluation and use of educational technologies; or an equivalent combination of education and experience. 

Desired Qualifications

Experience in the design, delivery, and evaluation of employee-facing learning and development programs in a higher education context; technical proficiency with educational technologies and e-learning authoring tools; learning needs analysis and the creation of aligned solutions; program or project management.
