Position Summary

Michigan State University operates FRIB as a user facility for the U.S. Department of Energy Office of Science (DOE-SC), supporting the mission of the DOE-SC Office of Nuclear Physics.

As one of 28 DOE-SC user facilities, FRIB provides researchers with one of the most advanced tools of modern science to study rare isotopes, or short-lived nuclei not normally found on Earth. FRIB hosts what is designed to be the most powerful heavy-ion accelerator, enabling scientists to make discoveries about the properties of rare isotopes, nuclear astrophysics, fundamental interactions, and applications for society, including in medicine, homeland security, and industry. 

User facility operation is supported by the DOE-SC Office of Nuclear Physics. MSU’s nuclear physics graduate program is a top-ranked program nationally, according to U.S. News & World Report.

Major Position Duties/Responsibilities

  • Evaluate nuclear structure and decay data relevant to the research at FRIB for the ENSDF (Experimental Nuclear Structure and Decay File) database of the United States Nuclear Data Program (USNDP). 
  • Compile nuclear structure and decay data from newly-published journal papers and all data from FRIB for the XUNDL (Experimental Unevaluated Nuclear Data List) database of USNDP. 
  • Develop, carry out, or participate in research activities at FRIB relevant to nuclear structure and decay data. 
  • Communicate with FRIB users regularly and provide nuclear data support to scheduled experiments.
  • Performs other duties as required or assigned which are reasonably within the scope of the duties in this job classification. 

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Extensive knowledge and experience in nuclear structure and decay experiments 
  • Significant experience and proficiency in computer programming for data analysis and processing using Java, Python, and/or C++
  • Understanding data compilation and evaluation process including the ENSDF evaluation standard and data format
  • Excellent communication skills to communicate effectively and credibly, both verbally and in writing with all audiences
  • Proficiency with Linux shell commands and scripts
  • Commitment to nuclear structure and decay data program

Required Degree

Doctorate -Experimental Nuclear Physics

Minimum Requirements

  • PhD in Experimental Nuclear Physics, with a concentration in Nuclear Structure
  • At least three years of experience as a post-doctoral researcher in the area of nuclear structure and decay with a record of accomplishment
  • At least five years of experience and proficiency in computer programming for data analysis and processing

Desired Qualifications

  • Five years of experience as a post-doctoral experience in experimental nuclear physics
  • Experience with experimental techniques and methods in nuclear structure and decay experiments
  • Experience and knowledge in experimental nuclear structure data compilation and evaluation
  • Five years of experience in programing with Java, Python, /C++
  • Experience with ML/AI in processing nuclear data
