Position Summary

The Departments of Statistics and Probability (STT), Computational Mathematics, Science, and Engineering (CMSE), and Computer Science and Engineering (CSE), at Michigan State University (MSU) invite applications for a tenure-system faculty position beginning Fall 2023. This position is a joint appointment among STT, CSE, and CMSE. While we expect the appointment to be at the assistant professor level, depending on the experience of the candidate, an appointment at the level of associate or full professor will be considered.

MSU has a long and proud tradition of excellence for world-class research in the areas of statistics, machine learning, computation, and artificial intelligence. The three departments (STT, CMSE, CSE) are home to internationally renowned faculty with a wide variety of expertise in fundamental and interdisciplinary research as well as thriving undergraduate and graduate student communities. Collectively, the three departments offer six bachelor’s degrees, four master’s degrees, and three doctoral degrees including the jointly offered master’s degree in Data Science and the bachelor’s degrees in Data Science and Computational Data Science. Graduates of our programs go on to careers in academia, industry and government. 

The intellectual focus of the position is algorithmic bias reduction and/or auditing with results that may lead to improvements in diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) in society.

This open position is supported by the MSU Provost’s 1855 Professorships initiative that is aligned with the university’s diversity, equity, and inclusion strategic plan and seeks to “…elevate the academic quality and reputation at MSU.” The new faculty member will be expected to contribute to the multidisciplinary, “Diversity and Data Science” cluster of quantitatively oriented researchers who study and address algorithmic bias. Minimum Requirements

Applicants must have a research portfolio that includes work in algorithmic bias reduction and/or auditing with results that may lead to improvements in diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) in society. Examples of algorithmic bias reduction and/or auditing include but are not limited to the following:  

  • Development of statistical and computational algorithms with less bias  

  • Data science approaches to auditing algorithmic bias  

  • Applications of minimizing algorithmic bias in areas of major societal importance, such as for risk assessment in banking and insurance  

  • Legal aspects of statistical and computational algorithms  

The successful candidate should have or be near completion of a Ph.D and will have demonstrated the ability to carry out forefront research with results that may lead to improvements in DEI in society and at MSU. 

Required Application Materials

We request that applications include: 

(1) a 1 page cover letter that frames the application in the context of this position including how the applicant’s research portfolio includes work in algorithmic bias reduction and/or auditing that may lead to improvements in DEI in society. The applicant should also identify two publications in the cover letter that the applicant considers to be the most impactful. 

(2) a CV, including a list of publications, accepted proposals for funding/resources, contributed and invited talks, teaching and mentoring roles, contributions to the academic community, and efforts in public outreach. 

(3) a 2–6 page research statement highlighting past research accomplishments and future plans. This statement should include experience or plans to advance DEI within the data science  research community and should include work in algorithmic bias reduction and/or auditing. 

(4) a 1–3 page teaching statement describing the applicant’s experience in instruction and research mentoring of graduate and undergraduate students, including experiences or plans to create an inclusive and equitable learning environment for students. 

(5) Names of three references.
