Position Summary
The Zhao Research Lab in the Department of Mechanical Engineering at Michigan State University is seeking applications for one Postdoctoral Research Associate specializing in biomass-derived advanced materials and biomass conversion. Our research primarily focuses on integrating heat transfer and advanced manufacturing to convert biomass into higher-value products such as energy-efficient building materials and fuels for decarbonization and sustainability. This full-time, 12-month, fixed-term position is 100% research-oriented, with a preferred start date of March 1st, 2025. Reappointment is conditional on funding availability and satisfactory performance. This position is not remote-friendly; on-site presence is required for laboratory and collaborative work. The position may involve exposure to laboratory chemicals and materials typical to engineering research environments.
Biomass-derived advanced materials play a crucial role in various nature-based solutions to climate change, such as energy saving, sustainable CO2 capture, and electrochemical conversion. Successful candidates will be expected to approach this topic from multiple angles and develop their research questions. Ideal applicants will have prior experience in relevant projects, the ability to conduct independent research, and the necessary skills to mentor Ph.D. students and prepare manuscripts. Expertise in lignocellulosic materials, cellulose composites, biomass processing, material characterization, and biomass conversion is highly desirable.
Applicants are also encouraged to seek collaborations with faculty members in the Civil and Environmental Engineering (CEE), Biosystems and Agricultural Engineering (BAE), and Chemical Engineering and Materials Science (CEMS) departments at MSU. The Zhao Research Lab is committed to fostering an inclusive and equitable environment and expects successful applicants to contribute to a culture that promotes diversity, equity, and inclusion in STEM.
