Position Summary

The Biomedical Laboratory Diagnostics Program at Michigan State University invites applications for a Fixed Term Faculty position (non-tenure) at a rank commensurate with experience. The appointment will be an academic year, nine-month position. This individual will be responsible for in-person and online instruction at the undergraduate and graduate level. The teaching load would be approximately 3 courses per semester, the discipline of which would depend upon candidate expertise and BLD program need. MSU BLD offers two undergraduate degrees, Biomedical Laboratory Science and Medical Laboratory Science (a NACCLS accredited program) and three graduate degrees – an MA in Biomedical Laboratory Science, an MS in Clinical Laboratory Science, and an MS in Biomedical Laboratory Operations. Additional responsibilities include advising, professional engagement, service, and outreach. Opportunities for summer employment and/or clinical activities may be accommodated. The salary is negotiable and commensurate with experience.

Minimum Requirements

  • A doctoral degree in biological sciences, public health, education, health sciences, or related field (Ast. Prof.).  [Masters Degree (Inst.) Bachelors Degree (Ast. Inst.)]
  • Hold a clinical certification/credential (such as MLS, or eligible).
  • Teaching potential as reflected in experiences educating or training people.
  • Ability to work collaboratively with colleagues as part of a team.
  • Commitment to professional development.

Desired Qualifications

  • Knowledge of or experience with discipline-based education research, scholarship of teaching and learning, and/or scholarly approaches to curriculum development.
  • Experience teaching in a relevant field as an instructor of record.
  • Professional experience developing and/or disseminating knowledge in a relevant field through research, outreach, publication, or presentations.
  • Participation in professional societies (such as ASCLS, ASCP, etc.).
  • Working experience in the medical laboratory.
  • Specific experience in hematology, immunology, molecular diagnostics, and scientific writing.

Summary of Health Risks

Exposure to human blood, serum, tissue and other body fluids and materials covered under Universal Precautions. This covers employees at MSU that have a reasonable anticipated risk of exposure to human blood and other potentially infectious materials. This includes Hepatitis B Virus (HBV), Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV), and other bloodborne pathogens that are included in MSUs Bloodborne Pathogen Program as outlined in the Exposure Control Plan (ECP). Job classifications, in which all or some of the employees have potential occupational exposure to bloodborne pathogens, are listed in Appendix A of the ECP. The ECP is revised on an annual basis and copies of the most recent edition are available on the Environmental Health and Safety (EHS) website at www.ehs.msu.edu The MSU Exposure Control Plan requires all employees to attend an initial training as well as an annual retraining on bloodborne pathogens. Employees covered under this program must be offered free Hepatitis B vaccination within the first ten days of employment.
