Position Summary
The Department of Small Animal Clinical Sciences at the College of Veterinary Medicine, Michigan State University, invites applications for a Tenure System (TS) or a multi-year renewable Health Programs (HP) Faculty Appointment position in Small Animal Orthopedic Surgery (with Neurosurgery) at the rank of Assistant, Associate or Full Professor, depending on qualifications and experience.
The successful candidate will join our dynamic small animal orthopedic surgery team, that includes 4 orthopedic surgeons, up to 6 surgery residents, and 9 service-dedicated veterinary nurses. The orthopedic service supports an all-inclusive array of orthopedic activities ranging from standard elective procedures to a comprehensive total joint replacement program including hip, elbow, ankle, and knee. Our activity in traumatology covers all aspects of conventional fixation techniques. We also offer an advanced minimally invasive and pediatric osteosynthesis program supported by two intra-operative fluoroscopy units, arthroscopy and a comprehensive array of implants and their dedicated instrumentation. Our orthopedic equipment includes conventional plates and ESFs as well as a variety of locking plates and interlocking nails. Advanced digital preoperative planning is available within the hospital and three operating suites are exclusively dedicated to orthopedics. Our busy orthopedic activity is complemented by state-of-the-art imaging modalities including on-site 64 slice helical CT scanner, 3.0 Tesla MRI, nuclear scintigraphy, and ultrasound. Collaborative research opportunities are available in addition to shared research space with other members of the orthopedic team including a gait analysis laboratory, biomechanical testing facilities and 3D printing technology.
The Department of Small Animal Clinical Sciences comprises over 40 faculty providing outstanding patient care with a superb team of highly qualified veterinary nurses. Our teaching hospital, the Veterinary Medical Center, is equipped with advanced diagnostic and therapeutic capabilities including 10 operating suites, operating microscope, minimally invasive laparoscopy/thoracoscopy, 64 slice helical CT, digital cinefluoroscopy unit, intra-operative C-arm, nuclear medicine, linear accelerator, video endoscopy, renal replacement therapy, and ventilator support. A newly acquired Philips MR 7700 3.0 Tesla MRI has been installed, offering superb imaging facilities. In addition, diagnostic support for the VMC is provided by the state-of-the-art Veterinary Diagnostic Laboratory, that performs over one million diagnostic tests per year on ~180k cases and provides a rich resource for collaborative research opportunities. Furthermore, an NIH-funded Center for Excellence in Imaging & Image-Guided Therapies, and the Clinical Innovations Program, are two new developments that provide further support for our clinical faculty. We have all the supportive specialty services including anesthesiology, cardiology, dentistry, dermatology, 24/7 emergency and critical care, step-down ICU, internal medicine, interventional radiology, neurology, oncology, ophthalmology, primary care, sports medicine and rehabilitation, and theriogenology.
The orthopedic surgery service has a strong program with a busy caseload, and experienced faculty. The successful candidate’s responsibilities will include management of referral orthopedic surgery and select neurosurgery cases (including periodic emergency service), clinical instruction of house officers and students, and a negotiable commitment to scholarly contributions in the candidate’s area of expertise. Preference will be given to candidates with expertise in neurosurgical procedures and a demonstrated commitment to a multidisciplinary team approach. Participation in the didactic pre-clinical teaching curriculum and committee assignments is also expected. Assignments of clinical service, teaching and scholarly activity are negotiable with the Department Chairperson. Merit evaluations and promotions are based on the faculty member’s performance within the assignments.
The role of the successful applicant will encompass clinical service, education, and research/scholarly activity. The amount of time dedicated to each of these endeavors is flexible and will be geared towards the interests, strengths, and qualifications of the applicant. Tenure system appointments require a greater percentage of time dedicated to both independent and collaborative, externally funded research, with less time devoted to clinical service. Health Programs (HP) appointments are unique to Michigan State University Colleges of Human, Osteopathic, Veterinary Medicine, and Nursing and are predicated on the need to enhance programs in clinical education, patient care services and clinical research. Health Programs (HP) appointments emphasize clinical service and teaching, although these positions are flexible to allow ample time for research and scholarly activity. Both tenure system and HP appointments are expected to contribute to preclinical and clinical education of veterinary students, interns, and residents. HP faculty appointed in the Department of Small Animal Clinical Sciences typically have 50-70% clinical assignments devoted to clinical and pre-clinical instruction, patient care services, and the general administrative efforts of the Department and College. In addition, HP faculty are expected to be active in research and other scholarly endeavors. Minimum Requirements
Applicants must have a DVM/VMD (or equivalent degree). Eligibility for licensure to practice veterinary medicine in Michigan (Clinical Academic Limited licensure and Controlled Substance licensure are available). Diplomate status (ACVS or ECVS) is preferred, but candidates with certifying examination eligibility will also be considered.
Desired Qualifications
MS/PhD (or equivalent degree) is preferred for those candidates who are interested in a tenure-stream position.
