Adjunct Instructor

Position Summary

The EAD K-12 Unit is looking for someone with an earned PhD or EdD who is interested in serving as an instructor (Ast. Inst/Instructor/Ast Prof rank) for one hybrid section of EAD 806 – The Evolving Practice of School Leaders for the 2024 fall semester. This is a Master’s level course for students pursuing building-level administrator certification. The ideal candidate for this position will have experience working as a building principal and teaching in higher education.

Please note that fall semester courses began on Monday, August 26. But this position will not begin until Monday, September 30. To allow time for the hiring process for this adjunct position, we are looking for someone to take over the course in the sixth week of the semester, as Dr. Madeline Mavrogordato (the usual instructor for this course) moves into a leadership position within the College.

Once the hire for this course has been made, Dr. Mavrogordato would meet with that person to onboard them to this class and the syllabus. The class will also have a PhD student serving as a teaching apprentice who will stay with the course for the full semester and help with the transition process.

Course Content
EAD 806 – The Evolving Practice of School Leaders is a required course for students in our Master’s program, which leads to building-level administrator certification in Michigan. The course has been taught previously by Dr. Madeline Mavrogordato and Dr. Melissa Usiak. Both would be available to answer questions after an adjunct takes over the course.

The course focuses on the work and structure of school-level leadership. The learning objectives for students in the course include:

A knowledge base related to:
o Understanding the historical and contemporary context of school leadership
o Organizational theory
o School culture and climate
o Leading schools to promote equity and access to opportunity
o Promising leadership practices and theories

Critical reading, thinking, and writing skills related to:
o What it means to be a leader and to lead others
o Ethical leadership
o Myself as a leader

Effective communication and discussion skills through:
o Class discussion
o Written communication
o Oral presentations
o Technological tools

Course Logistics
EAD 806 will meet during the fall semester on Tuesday evenings. The course is hybrid such that there is a mix of online and in-person class meetings in East Lansing. From the start date of this position, there will be three remaining in-person meetings on campus on Tuesday 10/8, 11/12, and 12/3 from 7:10 – 9:10pm. There will be synchronous online meetings on Tuesday 10/1, 10/15, 10/29, 11/5, 11/19, and 11/26 from 5:00 – 7:00pm. There is also an in-person class meeting in East Lansing on 9/24. If the adjunct instructor has been selected by that date, they would have the option to attend the September 24 class meeting to meet the students and receive an official hand-off from Dr. Mavrogordato. But this is not required.
