Position Summary

The Research Associate will contribute towards the harvesting of isotopes, conduct mass-separation experiments at FRIB, collect and analyze data, review relevant literature, and disseminate the results in research papers and conferences.

Major Duties/Responsibilities

  • Assist with the establishment of a new mass-separation capability in order to gain access to high specific activity radioisotopes from FRIB
  • Develop techniques to manufacture targets for nuclear data measurement, accelerator operation, and other scientific studies
  • Support graduate students in their research projects
  • Handle open radioactive sources (alpha, beta, gamma emitters), operate radioanalytical instruments (alpha/ gamma spectroscopy, liquid scintillation counting), general analytical instruments (UV-Vis spectrophotometer, ICP-OES, ICP-MS), surface characterization instrumentation (SEM-EDS, XPS, XRF), and relevant automated systems
  • Disseminate results in research papers, at conferences, and workshops 
  • Conduct scientific research related to isotope harvesting, developing and optimizing separation techniques, and analytical approaches to separate and purify specific radionuclides
  • Performs other duties as required or assigned which are reasonably within the scope of the duties in this job classification

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Ability to carry out independent and original radiochemical research relevant to radionuclide separation, target preparation, and characterization
  • Skilled and experienced using analytical instruments
  • Skillful ability to handle open radioactive sources
  • Ability to effectively collaborate and work in a team environment
  • Excellent communication skills to communicate effectively and credibly verbally and in writing with all audiences
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suites

Required Degree

Doctorate -Radiochemistry or Nuclear Chemistry or closely related field

Minimum Requirements

  • PhD in Radiochemistry or Nuclear Chemistry or closely related field
  • At least one year of experience in handling radioactive material

Desired Qualifications

  • Demonstrated experience in setting up and conducting beam experiments at accelerator facilities
  • Demonstrated experience in supervising students and trainees
