Michigan State University announces a position opening for the Burkhardt Professor in Railway Management & Executive Director.  The Burkhardt Professor & Executive Director provides an exciting opportunity to provide intellectual and industry leadership for the Center for Railway Research and Education (CRRE) including the Railway Management Certificate Program (RMCP) with a goal to complete and disseminate world class knowledge in railway management and transportation thought leadership and education.  The MSU CRRE promotes broad executive education and thought leadership in freight and passenger railway and intermodal/multimodal transportation, aligning with supply chain management and mobility.

The MSU Center for Railway Research and Education (CRRE) reports to the Dean of the Eli Broad College of Business.  The goal of the CRRE is to provide high-impact knowledge and education congruent with MSU’s mission and values of advancing knowledge and transforming lives by providing outstanding education, conducting high caliber research, and advancing outreach, engagement and economic activities.  As an institution of higher learning, MSU is committed to the highest ethical and academic standards with transparent decision making and accountable governance befitting its status as a public institution.

The Program objectives are to: 1) Establish, consolidate and grow MSU/CRRE’s position as the leading educational institution in North America for railway management; 2) Design, develop and deliver management certificate programs for executives in railway operations management and business development; and 3) Railway industry leadership through fee-for-service research and resulting knowledge dissemination.  The railway industry has been a principal provider of passenger and freight transportation for over 200 years and employs cutting edge transportation technology and service delivery capabilities.  As the railway industry responds to the increasing needs for sustainable, economic global passenger and freight operations, there is a need to develop future railway and transportation industry executive leadership, support adoption of technology to improve service and reliability, and provide opportunities to research railway related issues.  It is the donors’ desire that MSU ultimately become the leading provider of graduate degrees and executive development needs for the rail industry.

The Burkhardt Professor will reside within the Executive Development Programs unit and will be expected to work with faculty across campus including those from the Colleges of Agriculture and Natural Resources, Business, Engineering, and Social Science. This is an academic staff position on a fixed-term appointment.

Michigan State University has been advancing knowledge and transforming lives through innovative teaching, research, and outreach for over 150 years.  MSU is ranked as one of the top 100 research universities and is rated as one of the top universities in supply chain management.  Its 51,300 students come from all 50 states and 125 countries.  The 5,700 faculty and academic staff annually conduct over $300 million in sponsored research.

The Burkhardt Professor/Executive Director will:

  • Participate in the creation and delivery of executive seminars and short courses for railway and transportation education with a focus on modal operations, business development, intermodal and multimodal processes, and transport roles in global supply chains;
