Position Summary

The Michigan State University Veterinary Diagnostic Laboratory is seeking a Medical Laboratory Technician in the Histology section of the VDL.

The successful candidate will work in a team laboratory environment requiring compliance with Environmental Health and Safety (EHS) training for Biological Safety, Medical Waste, Chemical Hygiene and Laboratory Safety, and Security Awareness.

The Histology section position duties include: Trimming/grossing to processes fixed animal tissues according to established Standard Operating Procedures (SOP) and turnaround times. Enter trimming information into LIS system; takes pictures and annotates cases as needed (training will be provided); working with potentially hazardous chemicals: formic or hydrochloric acid used to treat routine samples and fixed Prion samples; process accessioned submissions to prepare for microtoming; performs basic Histology Lab duties.

Position responsibilities include the following:

70% - Trimming/Grossing of fixed animal tissues following established Standard Operating Procedure and turn-around times.  Assist others with trimming processes.  

15% - Process accessions submissions to prepare for microtomy.      

10% - Basic Histology duties: label slides, file and/or pull blocks, un-load instruments etc.

5% - Participates in laboratory problem-solving, policy making, and Standard Operating Procedure writing and revision.  Attends staff meetings and participates in VDL activities.  Assists with special projects. Inventories supplies

Unit Specific Education/Experience/Skills

Knowledge equivalent to that which normally would be acquired by completing a four-year college degree program in science or two-year associates degree program in Applied Science Medical Laboratory Technician including a six-month internship at an approved institution laboratory; up to six months of related and progressively more responsible or expansive work experience in basic laboratory techniques; or an equivalent combination of education and experience. The job may require specialty certifications, approvals, or training.

Desired Qualifications

Certification as a Histology Technician is preferred. One to three years of experience in basic laboratory techniques; Identification of animal organs, trimming/grossing of fixed animal organs (training will be provided). Requires manual dexterity (hand/eye coordination), involving working with potentially hazardous chemicals while maintaining established turnaround times.  Ability to work in a team setting and/or independently.  Laboratory Information Systems (LIS) or database system and office/spreadsheet software experience.  Excellent verbal and written communication skills.  Experience in a diagnostic laboratory preferred.

A successful candidate will be a professional who is organized, detail oriented, and one who does not sweat the small stuff and is able to remain calm, cool, and collected under pressure. The ideal candidate for this role will be team oriented, collaborative by nature, customer service focused, an independent problem solver, and has a positive attitude, while always maintaining a professional demeanor. Good written and oral communication skills; ability to function as a team member within and across multiple levels of operations. Experience working in a laboratory environment requiring specific safety and security awareness training.
