Emergency Technician

Position Summary

Provides patient care for ill and injured animals in the Veterinary Medical Center. This position will be primarily providing support to our Small Animal Emergency Service; Instructing and demonstrating techniques to students; assists students, veterinary technicians, and veterinarians in their work; maintains supplies, equipment, and cleanliness of hospital areas. Skills you will develop and utilize include emergency triage, patient stabilization, nursing care, knowledge of setup and assisting with emergency procedures. With four Boarded Critical Care Specialized Veterinarians and two Emergency and Critical Care Veterinary Technician Specialists, we support and assist in your career development.  Three 12 hour days, first and third shifts available, rotating weekends and holidays. 

 

Unit Specific Education/Experience/Skills

Knowledge normally acquired in the first two or three years in college, technical or vocational school in Veterinary Technology; six months to one year of related and progressively more responsible or expansive work experience in extensive patient care, surgery, anesthesia, drug- dosing, and sterilization; experience in the use of spreadsheet and word processing software. May require experience in a veterinary hospital research setting, or an equivalent combination of education and experience; licensed as a Veterinary Technician with the State of Michigan or attainment of such certification within one year from date of employment.

Desired Qualifications

Summary of Physical Demands

Lifting and carrying animals up to 50 pounds individually, or 150 pounds as a team.

Summary of Health Risks

TB risk or potential exposure to animal or specimens with Mycobacterium bovis. Work with animals or unfixed animal tissue. Wear a respirator (does not include paper dust mask worn for comfort).
